Re: autograss racing

I went once, only once like. But it was good, lots of little Novas with 2-litre engines where the back seats should have been. Definately worth checking out I would say

Cool Re: autograss racing

I did in my younger days started on unmodified side valves ford 100e trouble was most of the others were modified until they started to clamp down on the cheating ..nowadays they check and you wont get away with it..good fun and a cheap way to cut your teeth on circuit racing ..obviously its getting more expensive now with the price of fuel.and many clubs are folding because they cant afford the public liability insurance etc..

Re: autograss racing

the only issue i have with it is the rules arent strict enough for example in one class you can have a ford ka with an engine in the back that cost u about 3 grand racing against a mini that goes like a rocket that cost 35 grand
so you obviously know whos going to win there needs to be stricter rules on performance

Cool Re: autograss racing

Some of the best cars were the single seaters which had engines at the rear and in my time they used the ford cosworth mated to a vw trans axle..they used to go like sh*t of a shovel nowadays they are using motor bike engines and transmissions ..one of my neighbours belongs to the Penhow club back here in south wales..the best way for you to get started is to pick an unmodified section ..have a look at the cars in the pits during the interval and try to spot the cheats ..you will then know who you are racing against..and you can always lodge a complaint if that car wins a race your in.. here's some pics for the radford club..there were two brothers racing in my day the vernihows [garage owners] one with a single seater special with a ford V6 in it with tripple webber carbs..

Re: autograss racing

My Uncle was UK champion years back, and builds them to sell these days... Building a twin hayabusa engined mini pick up at the minute, but most are these... These have Nova engines in but the previous mark had cbr 600 or 900 engines in!

Re: autograss racing

I went to watch a few weeks ago to my local track near Spalding. Bloody good days racing. Races only last about 5 minutes, but as one race is going, the next grid is getting lined up, so there's not much of a break between.
The racing is very varied, different classes with different regs, and about the rules not being strict enough? You sure? Have you looked at the regs? The rules are very strict. You may have seen two cars from different classes taking part in the same race. That does happen in all forms of racing.

Also, lots of cinqs and seis racing in my local club. The engineering involved in some of the specials is amazing, so yes, worth tracking down your local club and going along.

Are but the problem there is it a modified class and anything goes when your in that type of class and the KA with the engine in the back will be classed as modified..I can remember there was a morris marina with a rover V8 in the back doing the rounds in my day it was great on the straights but cornered like a duck on an ice rink..ooopps..its great fun to watch and take part in not many of the clubs down our way have survived tho and Cardiff and district folded ages ago.. dont know how far back you can remember but in my day the tyres we used had tractor treads on them and the left front one had a single rib running around it to help you dig in on the corner ..was a great aid and helped you get around the corner..the new tyre regs where just coming in when I packed in..some one had been injured by a flying stone that had got jammed in the tread of a tyre and it had shot out hitting a spectator on it travels so the need for a tyre with a tread that wont hold house bricks was called for ..

He builds them to sell, with a choice of engine mate...

He used to race a big space framed custom with a chevvy V8 in it, used to pick the front wheels up under acceleration - apparently with cars like that you steer with the accelerator pedal, to kick the back end out
