Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

Hmmm, all good reading!

Personally, I think a lot of the more recent banter has tended to be smutty innueundo-type comments. Looking back in the past, there was a tendency to be crude, which is not on?!?!

Has anyone complained about the levels yet? I think there are a few hippocrites about, tbh. It only takes one of us, me included, to kick off and the rest follow suit.

Maybe having the option to turn off or on the LL is a valid point. But then if you are only interested in one marque of car, then surely you would look just in that particular forum. The LL is there for a bit of fun, after all. BUT I admit I have a tendency to thread enhance/re-direct a few times, which is what this post is all about, surely.

Stu

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

Surely the Leisure Lounge is a good thing though if you just want to post something quite general or ask something which is non-fiat related (which is what its for!)

When a thread has been started as a joke or something to make you laugh i reckon that should be fine, you should be able to tell from the thread title if its a serious thread or not.

Im glad Ben has bought this up though as what sometimes annoys me is when a perfectly good Fiat-based thread degrades into smut and nonsence, or when a thread suddenly goes miles off the point of why it was posted in the first place.

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

TBH i think Ben is right, ive just read up on whats been happening since yesterday and im astounded at some of the topics that have gone so far off topic it's unbelievable.
I can be as smutty as the next person and ten to one ive prob done a lot of topic hijacking in the past but from what ive seen today it's no wonder ive not posted for a while

Good on you Ben for bringing this to the forefront.

I agree if your gonna start a topic with the intention of it going "smutty" then thats ok. But some serious topics in LL are being turned too and thats uncalled for.

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

TBH - like i keep saying i havent noticed any smut other than that in the LL - know sometimes it does happen but it does tend to stay in the lesuire lounge, like stu said i think some people are being hipercritcal.

like i mentioned before - and stu has too, in the past there has been one or two people (mentioning no names) who have said stuff which is utterly crude. I admit i make lots of innuendos as many of you do - its only banter, i dont as far as i am aware say anything utterly crude. The stuff that people say on there is harmless fun and if people are offended by it then they should say at the time - i know i have and requested what has been said to be removed.

BTW ben isnt thinking of removing LL just taking it off the new posts facility, it will still be accessible through forums

What annoys me is my own threads becoming another subject all together. I'm sure this is shared by all members but the big question is.....................

What condones smut etc and who will be removing it because as Stu said earlier he's guilty and he's a mod so hopefully no abuse of power!

i dont think it is a question of abusing power - the mods only have power as such in thier own allocated forum!

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

The problem just seems to be one of context, if someone starts a thread about replacement gearknobs it would be crude to turn it into one about phallic symbols. However if, oooh, what nick shall I pick on? Hmm, say, Nick wrote about gearsticks as a phallic symbol the context is set in that tone, and you know what to expect.

e.g. judge it right ;-)

Yes?

Thanks, lol, I am THE guilty one - anyone else want to stand accused as well?!?

If anyone has a problem with any of their threads being hijacked, then maybe a friendly pm to say so, or report to moderator as a last resort - if WE/ME don't know people don't like it, why should we stop doing it - as far as I was concerned, all part of the forum banter, no major harm as such.

My only mod powers are in the Ulysse section - no smut in there, as far as I can see.....

Be interesting to go back to very old topics and see what OTHERS have said in the past - hmm, maybe not!

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

exactly stu - this is what i have been trying to say - i admit i do it, i said before but it seems funny how people who have made comments on this thread have also made other untopical comments and choose now to complain and if they had a problem before why not request the comment/post to be removed??!!??

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

Im not complaining either, i just dont like, say, a thread about gear knobs being changed into a thread about exhausts (purely examples).

I dont mind at all about a bit of banter, im sometimes in hysterics about what people say.

But then it often goes a bit far, and after the banter, the initial thread topic is lost...

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

yes i understand what your saying chris but it only really happens in the LL - not really anywhere else, and usually if the topic is dead anyway. my threads usually get trashed anyway, i dont mind as long i get the infomation i want. or if i havent i say can we get back on topic people.............

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

Yeah, I think the whole point is about keeping each thread in-line with the thread title!

I thnk smut is a side-issue, something that can or should be used where relevant [i.e. not EVERY thread, lol]. I just never realised it was UPSETTING so many people, that I do apologise to - I am not a mind-reader, and it always seemed to go down well.....[can I say that?]

There is an option now in the moderator controls to split a thread once it becomes off-topic, btw.

Re: Keeping Threads On Topic

Basically it comes down to, if the post had a point when it started, if possible this is what should be kept to... if the topic goes off due to progression in the post, then thats ok.... but if it's just fires off for no aparent reason is where we need to look out.

Let me think of an example:

I post about the weather being good (ok)
Someone comments this is great cause it means women wear skimpy clothing (still on topic)
Someone says they'd like to see X in skimpy (starting to drift)
X retaliating about Y (and it all goes downhill...)
Ensue a smut fest....

Just for now peeps, so we can get everything back on track... then you can all donate 50 and join the members only forum (with free access to the members only photo gallery too )
