Hi,

I've noticed that a lot of insurance companies ask for receipts for any mods on the car. Does anyone know how buying second hand parts would affect this, as more than likely your not going to get the original receipt especially if buying second hand parts which were standard on other cars.

Would this be dependent on the individual insurance companies or is there a general rule that all companies stick to?

Cheers,

Ian

If they ask for the receipt for the mod, they want to know what YOU paid for it, not what the person before you bought it. If they are doing a sort of new for old scheme, and you've put second hand parts on, or you've not got the receipt for the original modifications, the insurance company will normally be able to accept a quote for replacing the parts, or a letter from the manufacturer stating what the RRP was at the time of production (or current price if the part is still being produced.) if you're unsure what to do, phone them up and ask.

Hope that helps.

just to add. these are the type of things you need to clarify before taking out the policy. eg you dont want them saying your mods are worth £500 on top off the car when it would cost £1200 to replace them.
eg for my cinq turbo its technically irreplacable since VAD dont do the high boost conversion anymore. some companys do an agreed value of the car to cover thi type of thing

Thanks for the replies,

It was really about when insuring second hand mods. If the company wanted receipts for all modifications and you couldn't provide them - would they still allow you to do the mod?

hope your not fitting stolen parts

you'd have to agree the value of the parts with the insurance company, and get them to write it in to the policy for you. You might agree to no insure those modifications (i.e. they don't pay you for them if they get nicked etc...) and just have them declared on the policy.

I hope not. Nah, I haven't actually bought the parts but was thinking of getting some mk1 punto sporting alloys and the only way would be second hand i think. I was just wondering how insurance would be with this before I start looking.

Thanks for the advice!!(y)
