Hi Folks,

My son, 19, has just passed his test and I've said he can have my beloved Seicento if he sorts out the insurance. He planning on 6000 miles PA, SDP only.
He's had a years driving experience on my moggie minor as a learner, but I'm not sure that counts for anything.
I would like to a be a named driver on his policy as I would still use the car for the odd autotest or trial - so a "Big Brother" black box would have a fit with all the turning and twisting!! I'm 52 with 34 years no claims bonus so I pay peanuts for my policies, but I'm getting £££silly for my son.
Has anybody got a solution to this?

Hi there,

I've filled in online application for Chris Knott after looking down forum - don't really want a black box unless it can be turned off/ignored for track use

We'd love to help your son but we need him to have at least 12 months' NCB before the insurers on our panel will accept him for the club scheme I'm afraid. Maybe next year?

Hi CKI,

Thanks for trying, I suppose its like going for a job as a spotty kid when you leave school - they always ask what experience you've got but you don't have any because you've just left school - the old catch 22 situation

I'll keep trying

Funny can't remember my dad doing this for me when I was 18, let alone giving me a car!!!!

Hi,
Please feel free to give us a try for insurance. If you'd like to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

Try Sky, my daughter, at 17, insured a classic panda for £1400 fully comp and no black box last year and this year with one years NCB she's just renewed for £660 aged 18.

It helps if the vehicle is in their name and you'd be surprised to find out that some fully comp policies are cheaper than third party, fire and theft.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice

I've finally found one I'm happy with

Company :- General Accident via Go Compare

Policy Details:-

£350 excess
no Black Box
windscreen cover
Free legal cover (on special offer at the moment)
fully comp
me and my wife as named drivers on HIS policy
SDP and Travel to and from fixed workplace
£1700

GA didnt offer cover if I didn't put at least myself as a named driver, and it went cheaper still when I included my wife
Also, daft as it sounds, it was cheaper when the car is "left on the road" rather than "parked on your drive" - I can only assume this is because the scum that break into your house to knick your keys wont tend to do it if they don't know which house to break into
Also I noticed it was more expensive when I put in a really low annual mileage, we need about 6000 but went for 8000 just to cover a bit of extra and that worked out pretty good. Purely as an exercise, we tried 3000 which was more expensive.

Chris Knott - very nice lady but said he's too young and needs 1 year no claims - thanks for trying - I will ring you next year as discussed!
Adrian Flux £4000.00 + (cough, splutter, call A+E)

Finally got it sorted and we went out driving in blizzard conditions

He loved the car and said he was expecting it to feel heavy to drive like the Moggie, so was really surprised when he actually found it sensible to drive.

Not really happy with General Accident as they bumped the premium up to £1900.00 for no good reason they could give and I was told to take it or leave it, but is was still cheaper than everyone else by a country mile

Another new member for the forum created and I know he'll love the car.

It'll be commercially sensitive information regarding their rating factors and pricing, even the advisors won't have a breakdown of how the pricing is derived, and all companies are the same so I wouldn't get too hung up on it.
