... but it may help someone.

I just came to renew the insurance on the 500 (1.2 Lounge dualogic) now that it is a year old. We have an Admiral multicar policy, the other car being an '05 BMW 330D SE Touring. We have 10 years NCD on the BMW but only one year on the 500 (as we had only had one car previously).

Admiral wanted £430 for me and my wife on the Fiat and £540 for the BMW.

Direct Line were a fair bit more, but using Confused.com the best quote from a "proper" insurance company was from LV, who when I phoned up also gave a discount for having 2 policies (even though it is not a multi-car policy as such). LV quoted £320 for the 500 and £400 for the BMW, with a slightly lower excess on the BMW.

So that is £720 for both cars for the year with Liverpool Victoria, over £970 from Admiral and over a grand from DL. I'm pretty happy with that, bearing in mind that my wife has not been driving for that long and we only had that one year's discount. We do live in pleasant St Albans and have low risk jobs (lawyer and housewife) and have only had one no fault loss in recent years.

we paid around £500 for myself and 1 learner with elephant.co.uk, their renual letter quoted £700! Admiral (which is the same company) quoted us £375 so elephant matched it.

This is by far the LEAST pointless thread today! Threads about saving money are never pointless ;)

We got our renewal through from Admiral which was something like £790 for both of our cars. Wife has silly amounts of NCB and the 500 only has 4. Strange thing was the Subaru's insurance had gone down by about £70 which is strange considering it's group 17. The crap thing was that the quote didn't include the NCB on the 500 being protected, called up and asked how much it was to protect my NCB and it took it up by something silly like £100. Called back up said that I could get the 500 insured cheaper elsewhere, reduced the mileage on the Subaru to about 5k miles and she gave us the maximum discount possible which brought it down to £707 if we paid in full which we do and both NCB's were protected :)

Personally I would NEVER go with Directline. Having worked for one of the price comparison sites I can tell you that when the company I worked for listed Directline on their site for FREE, Directline threatened legal action if they didn't remove their quotes. Lets just say that directline's quotes were rather uncompetitive...... Yet in Directline's adverts they talk about not advertising on price comparison sites because they want to pass the savings onto you.

Call me crazy, but I will never insure my car with Directline, if they are that dishonest in their advertising do you honestly think that they're not going to use every trick to get out of paying your claim out or paying out as little as possible.

Good saving over the original premium. (y) BMWs were always dear to insure but your OHs quote is very good considering that she is only has a years NCB bonus built up. Did you get any protection on your NCB or even a 'step back' ?

In Ireland I'm paying €360 on the 1.4 Lounge with no mods :) with a 'step back to 30%' on the NCB. Tesco are doing the best deals at the moment. Quinn Direct are now gone but they were unbelieveable if you had a claim.

I've had my fair share of experience in terms of trying to get my car insured in the UK..

I remember that the Mk5 Golf GTi was released during the 2nd year of my law degree in London. I begged the parents for one but couldn't get insured. Ended up getting a Smart Fortwo (999cc NA) :slayer::

Anyway, insurance is pretty cheap in Hong Kong.. Say for example:
- My Fiat 500 1.4 100hp, costs around 60quid to insure
- My E55 AMG costs something like 70quid to insure
- My Fairlady Z however costs 550quid to insure and this is considered to be really expensive here already :yum::yum:

To put an end to my GTi dream, I returned to Hong Kong after the uni years and bought myself a Mk5 GTi Lightweight. Was only 100quid to insure. Later inquired about the Rocco 2.0T, again, very low rates :slayer:

They're one of the worst companies to deal with should you need to make a claim also! (n)
