Ive been qetting quotes online for my car and what modifications i want to do so i can get a ballpark figure of what i can afford to do but it only says suspension changes, what would that be classed as? Just springs or coilovers?
If i had put coilovers on and just put suspension changes on the insurance would i still be insured legally?

There are so many possible mods that any insurer will only give an indication of cost until they know exactly what you intend to do.

Insurance law is based on what is known as "utmost good faith" which means that both sides must tell the truth at at all times and not omit anything that might affect the risk or level of cover. The insurers do this with pages of small print. You need to do it by spelling out the details, then they can decide if they will cover you and at what price.

Don't forget that they may insist on an eningeers report (which you would have to pay for) depending on what level of mods you have in mind.

But when ive got insurance before i always do it online so if i added suspension changes, would they ring me and ask what exactly it is? Because if not and i claimed on an accident what would they insure me for?

just put down suspension changes. they will ask you how low it is in gradings
1-5cm or 5cm > .

It altered my insurance +£20 which is nothing :) ( I'm on coilies)

Ah thats fair enough, thats what i wanted to know. Its just that i was talking to russ and he said for his new car it was something like £200 extra for coilovers than just for springs

Coilovers are just adjustable springs & shocks which is all considered "suspension" so "suspension changes" would cover them, but that option is very vague so they would possibly get in contact with you for more details.

I dont drive my Punto alot so when I chose 5000 annual mileage, I had a letter asking for my current mileage. Insurers may do everything they can to not pay out at times but they will poke around for more details if they need to, they have the rights.

If your unsure and they dont get in contact with you, give them a call for peace of mind.

Thats why I explained about utmost good faith and that the insurers cover themselves with the small print. You need to tell them EXACTLY what you intend to do and get written proof from them that they will cover it.

This actually happened. Young driver (teenage male) got online cover for lower suspension on one of those tick box websites. He lowered the ride hight by getting a lot of his mates to sit in the car which compressed the coil springs. He then used dozens of plastic cable ties to hold the springs in the compressed position. The inevitable happened and one lot of ties let go on a sharp bend. He got done for dangerous driving (based on the vehicle being in a dangerous condition) and no insurance as they refused cover as the mod was not done safely.

The same argument could be used regardless of how carefully and safely suspension is lowered as, if you have a crash, it is easy for the insurers to put the blame on the mods. Spell it out and get written confirmation that they are happy to provide cover for the mods you want to do. It will cost more and take time but at least you have insurance that will back you up if it becomes necessary.
