Lens Options to go with new camera ?

good to hear you went with an olympus, they don't do 'kit' lenses in the normal sense, they ARE their normal good quality lenses, just at kit prices!!:D

wheras canon/nikon fob you off with £20 worth of plastic, that allows teh camera to work, but not to any real effect :(

with 4/3's 14mm =28mm (on the 35 scale) right??

just I like my uber wide, I DID save up for near 6months to buy a canon 20d + canon 10-22 (gorgous lense BTW, but daymn pricey), only to drop it about 2weeks later :(
wasn't thinking, was out exploring, went to release it from tripod (which was packed right down), and didn't get hold of it, just pushed the button an watch it fall to the ground, whilst slowly muttering 'sht' :bang:

so yeah, that lasted a long time, will be at least a yr before I can save up enough to buy another camera :bang::bang::bang:

As said, 4/3 is 2x crop. Olympus do the 7-14 at ultra wide which is a fabulous lens!

I had an Olympus PAS camera some time ago which was stolen in a burglary, that would take pictures better than my Fuji S5500, it was a real quality piece of kit for a PAS and I loved it so it made this choice a lot easier. I just can't wait to get my hands on it now, first thing I am doing is going out for the day around the local countryside. I've downloaded the PDF manual so I'm going to read the whole thing before it comes, problem with that is I like to have the product in front of me at the same time to help the content sink in.

There is also the 8mm lens they offer. Fixed zoom but at 16mm tis all good

half the price too

the 8mm is a fisheye, so the focal legth doesnt really come into the equation much. as for wide angle zooms, yes the 7-14 is expensive, but also has some of the best quality glass on the market. There is also the 11-22 which is an exceptionally sharp lens!

What people seem to forget, encluding some enthusiastic Olympus users, is that even the cheapest Olympus lenses arent cheap in terms of quality. If you want cheaper lenses either look at 4/3 mount sigma lenses or look at other manufacturers who make cheap plastic kit lenses. I for one, as an Olympus user, am happy to see Olympus not making cheap rubbish lenses, and concentrating on good quality ones. Because of Olympus' dedication to quality I will be very happy with my E1 untill I purchase a Leica M8, something that I could not have said with Nikon or Canon

No, you didnt. Its just that the way you go on is that anyone who doesnt spend the most and have the best of the best in everything is an inferior person to someone who has the money to get the best of everything.

Thats like having the most amazing photo youve ever seen in your life, its pefectly sharp, amazing colours, stuning subject, yet when you find out the the photographer used a sigma lens on an olympus camera, you decide its a pile of ****...

I think someone cant differentiate between my comments on their web design techniques and my opinion on photography. If you read my comment properly you will see that what I am saying is that if you want cheaper lenses you shouldn't be looking at Olympus lenses, and probably shouldn't really consider the Olympus bodies as cheap lenses do not exist!

Personally I go on recommendation at this point in time due to my lack of experience with these cameras and lens options. I'd but a cheap lens if someone said it would be good for what I needed it to do, I didn't realise there was such a difference in quality until a few days ago. I'm just thankful I could get the answers required on this imaging section, if I'd have asked the same questions on the dedicated photography sites I would more than likely have been guided towards a much more expensive kit, that's why I asked here. you can spend a small fortune on equipment. The stuff you have got though will last you a long time while you become used to and learn about photography. Check out this guides:

They are a good starting point imo.

To put into context how highly I rate the equipment you have ordered. I have an Olympus E1, which in my experience is very similar in performance to the E510 (My dad owns an E510 so I have had a good play with it)! I am not going to upgrade this equipment untill I can afford the Leica M8 and a lens for it. The Leica M8 costs £3000 for the BODY! A lens on top is approximately £1000. IMO there is not a worthy upgrade anywhere inbetween the two. Yes the E3 is better and yes the high end canons and nikons are better than the E1 and E510 BUT IMO they arent better enough to bother changing to, especially if you intend to upgrade further later on.

Thanks for the links Stumac, a very good reference for the future, hopefully all that stuff will just become second nature in time.

It's really satisfying to know I have bought well regarding the Camera, it's real peace of mind because it's not something I intend to replace for a long time, as long as I can get the lenses I'll need in the future then this may last me quite a while (y)

Well any advice you want on lenses just ask. I either have or have access to the majority of the 4/3 lenses.

I finally got my Olympus E510 through today, although I had to go elsewhere as I was getting no replies from Stuart at that shop. I had asked the guy to keep me a 510 and a bunch of bits but while I was waiting for the bonus from work to come through, they put the shop price down of that single lens kit by £40 so I asked him what he could do about it and I didn't hear from him again. That's no bad thing though, in the end I got the Twin Lens kit, a 1GB M-XD card, an Oly back pack, the Zuiko Macro Lens, a bunch of close up lenses for it, a spare battery,a remote control, a Sony Tripod all for just £15 more than I was getting the lesser kit mentioned.

As for the camera, perfect, just what I wanted and the pictures are spot on in whatever lighting I couldn't be happier with it. I'll be hanging around this section more often now I can play too ;)
