OK I have a choice of these cameras, nothing else because I don't wanna confuse things and me mams buyin it for me as an early christmas pressy
from one of her catalogues. ;)

Easiest way to do this is give you experts a link to the choices I have
and I need things like equipement to be taken into consideration with the cost comparisons. Which is the best value and so forth. Yes they are expensive but I aint turning down the offer :)

Here's one catalogue, if you type in SLR into the search feature at the top they all come up in one page.

and here's more here

Which would you spend your money on ?

Wow, what a rip off those catalogues are.

Top one - Pentax K100 £635 per Great Universal, best net price £288

Second one - Canon EOS400D £749 per Great Universal, best net price £387

I stopped looking after that, lol.

Hope your mum likes to waste her money :)

alpha 100 out of that lot, mainly as the kit lense is half decent, wheras the cannon kit lense with the 400D is rumoured to be sub std. and the nikon job ain't fannytastic either:(

but the prices on that website! I mean, I'm all for paying that in a small struggling local camera shop, but we're talking about funding argo's type places(n)

lol, it's one of her major vices :D

I knew that Pentax one was a rip off but that much is just taking the P.

But to be fair, those web prices are wrong in the catalogues, she has some supplements or whatever they are called and they are far cheaper, she's also due a few hundred quid commission so these prices are a lot closer than it suggests. Anyroad, it's either a camera for me or my drunken ass of a brother will get it out of her for booze, I know which one she'd rather do. Mums eh. :worship:

Cheers for the info, I suspected the Alpha would be a good buy in comparison and it was the camera I was intending to go out and purchase myself.
She's a bit stuck in her ways my mum, I told her the shops are the best bet but she like the convinience of buying from her catalogues. You also have to take into account she'll get something like 10 or 20% back from the purchase at the end of it, I can't remember exactly what it is now.

Jesus, those prices are disgusting, but seeing as you can get 'em down to something slightly less horrific fair enough. As already stated, the Sony appeals but I'm in a similar dilemma with regards to the 400D and D40/other Nikon. They're all great features wise, some slightly stronger in some areas than others, but I guess you can't really go wrong with any. All three have good lens choices available too, as Minolta lenses will go on the Sony (IIRC) and thousands of people use the Canons and Nikons so lenses are plentiful and cheaper.

I presume you've checked out DPReview and Steve's Digicams? There'll no doubt be very detailed reviews here for all of 'em.

Mark, I personally couldn't in all good conscience let anyone pay those prices for me. I hope the discounted prices are substantially lower!

Taking the little Fuji S6500 as an example. The catalogue price is £369.99, I recently paid £149.99 for one in Jessops, a difference of £220. That is nothing short of scandalous.

Yeah they really don't look too good on those pages do they but I can assure you there's a huge difference. The sony and the Pentax from Freemans are both around £80 cheaper than that price, IIRC the sony was £469, not that far off street prices and with the 10% she'll get back that will take it down to £427 or something like that, the pentax again was around the same price but that one in particular is still a lot higher than internet prices.
I'll get the book that they were in and confirm these prices.

Fuzzy, yes I have checked out both those sites ;)

As it is the Sony looks like the one to go for. Me Mam keeps phoning and asking which one I want and I just can't commit to it yet untill I know for sure she's not getting ripped off.

I think it's actually cheaper than that site because the 390 price is just the stand alone camera from what I can tell, put the lens in the bundle and it's 449 (y)

So I'll got for the sony and maybe get the extended guarantee although I will miss the video feature :chin:

sony overcharge for everything so personally id go with a nikon or canon and then at least there'll be lenty of secondhand goodies floating around.,(y)

but A mount type lenses fit the sony, therefore, you've got literally thousands of the bstrds to choose from :D

the kit 18-70 is what you will use most of the time anyway, don't bother going for the bigger one, you seriously won't find the need for it (unless you are a kit freak, in which case, look elsewhere, as the larger one ain't so hot).

also for £450 your getting an image stabilser lense, wheras other Dslr's in the same price bracket don't, infact I can't think of many kit lenses (the one it comes with, usuall bottom of the range lense) that have image stabilsation, which is a gyro on one of the elements, means you can just about get away without a tripod in locations/times when others WOULD be using tripods.

oh, and as for sony being a load of tosh, your right, but konica/minolta are NOT, they used to be RIGHT at the top, but recent times have killed them off :bang:
