the s5600 can be modified to remove the internal IR filter and can then do this;

Thanks for posting that link - Just thought I'd say that if you're interested in infrared, you don't have to go to the trouble and expense of modifying a camera to get results like that. I have only just got hold of the modified S5600 and for the previous three years I used an unmodified Canon Ixus camera.

The advantage that a modified camera has is that it's much more sensitive to infrared which lets you take infrared shots hand-held. With my unmodified Ixus, the exposures needed to be around a second, so I had to keep the camera still somehow - but the results are quite nice.

This is a link to the photos taken with an unmodified Ixus...

Unmodified does have the advantage that because you need a longer exposure, if you can keep the camera still on days where you have good clouds and a bit of wind, you can keep your subject nice and clear and have the sky motion blurred because it's moved during the time the photo is being taken so you can get some quite dramatic shots that way.

Have fun with it if you try it! :)

:) love your work.

like i said at the start of the thread i have a fuji f31fd and fuji s5600, from the remote test the f31fd seems to be much more sensitive to IR but i've no way of mounting a filter.

what filter do you reckon would be best for an non-modified s5600? I keep seeing a lot about different types of filter, but am at a loss at which works best with what.

Well, the little Canon Ixus doesn't really allow you to put filters on it either, but I found this bracket on ebay for about 5 or 6 quid that allows you to use them..

The filter I've always used is a Hoya R72 - there are other filters that are more strictly infrared, but I like the Hoya and it tends to be the most popular because the small amount of normal light you get helps to make the false colour infrared pictures. (the ones of mine that look blue and white as opposed to the really black and white ones). Regardless of how sensitive your camera is, that's probably the best bet, because the more strict filters will only make things more difficult and require even longer exposures.

Thanks for the nice remarks about my photos as well! - I forgot to mention that in my first post ! :)

i've been playing with new kit..

bit backwards that the f31 doesn't allow a filter to be boltedon. got a fuji e550 (predessor from when the s5500 was out) and it has an adapter ring on the body, which comes off, then you screw on a long tube (fuji kit part ebay + £40 inc adapters and afreebie cpl) and it completly incloses the pop out zoom lense at all lengths.
prevents excess dust getting into the lense mechanism as abonus too:)

got to get me an IR lense kit for the s5600. if only I knew someone selling a set :chin:

okies. i've setup a custom white balance, and this is the results.

1> 0.250s, f/4.5. Then auto levels.

2> 4.000s, f/22.0, Then auto levels.

3> 0.040s, f/3.8. Auto levels and slight crop.

i've not yet attempted any further processing. wanted to show what the imgaes look like pretty much right off a D50. Hoya H72 IR filter, and i left the UV filter on there too.

photo 2 is disturbingly aggresive, good work :)

you'll really progress your photography now you've moved from a bridge cam upto a dslr. I'm looking for a 20D/30D by cannon, sorry just can't do with that red triangle that nikons have on them

thanks :)

ive got a lot to learn re processing with IR shots. This is what someone on another forum did with my first image. he's rather good at this IR stuff!

 whats wrong with the red triangle? canons suck, nikon are the best. alalala. naah, theres not a lot in it. go to a shop and use both cameras, and pick the one that fits your hands better. i found the canons a bit fiddly and small.

thats cos you've been looking at the not so great 300/350/400D, all of which are a bit basic, I found the nikon d40/d40x a bit small and not really mansized :)

which is why I'm currently running a canon D1s mk2

with the extra battery grip (need it if you want to take more than 40photos) and a 24-105 lense.

it does everything I want even if the resoltion is only 4megap's. bought it 'damaged' i/e the rear screen didn't work, but fixed that pretty easily (dry joint) and works a treat, even if it does rival the QE2 for weight and handling
