As the title suggests, can you put a manual SLR lense on a digital SLR, as long as it is the right thread size and you use manual focusing?
Found a nice second hand telephoto lens thats in great condition that I fancy buying you see.

i'm not saying this as a "i don't beleive you so i want to you to explain urself kinda thing"

but, can you explain how it can be damaged. and also why lenses are not all compatible. I'm a newbie to all this, and am wanting to learn :)

Most DSLRs have the focus motor built into the camera body. This allows them to take a wider range of lenses. The D40 doesn't have a built in focus motor. This was for two reasons. To keep cost down and to keep weight down. This camera is aimed at point and shoot owners that want an upgrade. It allows entry into the DSLR market for under £400, it's basically a stripped out D50 made smaller.

When I say it's not compatible with other lenses, that's only the auto-focus. It can use other Nikon fit lenses but with manual focus. Unfortunately the view finder of the D40 isn't really designed to assist manual focus, again the reason being the market it is aimed at. Nikon admit that they expect most D40 users to use ONLY the kit lens.

As for potential damage, a DSLR is a complicated piece of kit. The CPU contacts on all lenses are not the same and if you fit the wrong one it won't be vary happy.

im not sure about the lens you are intending to buy but a lot of the older lenes do work on the nikon range.,
but as siad it will be manual focusing., if its cheap then give it a go, it could be worth it., is there a lens hood included on it?., i know its pretty difficult to get hoods for the older lenses coz i have a 70-200AF-S from the last range and they only stopped making that last year but still cant get the hood for it.,(n)

Richie, nah it doesn't have a hood, not that my current one does anyway.
Steve, the D40 will be with me forever, I can't afford another camera, cant even afford road tax at the end of the month :(

No need for the :( as far as the camera goes. It's a good camera. Perfect for learning how to use a DSLR. All the creative options are there and the kit lens is pretty good. :)

I think fuzzypanda has a D40 and some of his shots are very good.

Edit - Warehouse Express are doing a Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S DX ED lens for £139. That should be your next lens. Bargain!
