Hello, I wonder if anybody else has had the same problem as I have? Car is a 2007 Fiat Idea Elaganza 1.4 litre petro; with a five speed semi auto gearbox.

The problem is that I get a noise just like a CV joint clatter when I turn left. A couple of months ago, I changed the CV joint on the LH axle and noticed that the inboard part of the axle has a lot of radial play at the diff. It looks like the bearing in the diff has failed. Oddly enough, the driveshaft oil seal is not leaking. Having fitted a new CV joint, I still get the clattering when I turn left under power and it is getting worse.

I was not able to remove the driveshaft when the car was stripped down. It appeared to be firmly fixed in the diff and I didn't want to force it.

Has anybody else come across this problem? Is it a common fault? How difficult is it to change the driveshaft bearing in the diff? Is there actually a bearing in the diff?

Diff bearings will be set up with some preload. As the two casing halves are tightened together, the bearings are squeezed a little. This is critical to attain the correct mesh of the diff gears.
A new bearing may well be slightly different in depth to the original, so pre-load needs to be measured and correct shim selected. Not difficult, but tedious. Needs workshop manual, and dial gauge to measure.
pdf file of Panda manual attached, sadly 1.5Mb. Relevant procedure is on page 16, nearly at end, and is done using shims under the diff cover (seal housing).
