Hi all I bought my son an Idea 1.4 to get him to uni last summer off a dodgy bloke on ebay from Leeds and on the way home the gearbox was not well. (No wonder everybody hates Leeds!) So I changed it for second hand 05 Punto box last summer, finally found time to do an autopsy and the problem was the lay/driven shaft bearing ,I am really surprised that the ball bearing cage is made of plastic grrr. Good thing is how easy it is to strip and rebuild and only£ 17.99 should your 1.4 gearbox clunk and grind in first and second then quiet third fourth and fifth it could be this bearing.

Hi Andy I am surprized that all Punto related cars are actually on the road! As making these bearing cages out of bonfire toffee is surely a guaranteed failure.
The bearing cages job is to keep the balls in place, a sudden load on the bearing will try to force the balls apart and break it .Are all cars fitted with these things and are the uprated ones fitted with metal type cage?.

Hi Yes I did fully strip it's gear box with some apprension as I have not dealt with a cars manual gearbox before (though I have dealt with railcar self changing boxes)and it was easy.I intend to get a new bearing and have use it as a spare as the ex punto box might not last forever!.
