Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

Hey guys,

Thinking about buying a Fli 12 active sub, but am unsure of the best way to route the cables in my car (5 door MK1 Punto)

I hear running the cables down the sills is best/easiest way to do it but I am unsure as to what this involves exactly....

Also, which is the best way to get the power cable to the battery?

Yours,

Willber (confused!)

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

I have that sub in my mk1 punto and it sound the ****** I have the RCA cables down the drivers side and the power/remote down the passenger side. There is a grommit which is unused on that side...

if you undo the plastic holder for the bulkhead lining, there is a black grommit about an inch wide.. if you pull this out, you can poke a hole through the inner insulation with some pliers and push the power cable through it. *EDIT* to find the cable on the inside of the car, you have to put your hand above the heater matrix and feel along the insulation until you find it, it's not an exact science *EDIT* make sure you put the end to go the sub in first through to the car as the fuse wont go through the hole (don't ask... ) you have to make a hole in the grommit and put the cable through that so that water doesn't go through/ the cable doesn't ground out on the bodywork.

then just feed it behind the carpet to the sill, along the sill and under the plastic bits around the rear seat and through to the boot. put the remote lead along this side aswell...

do the same on the other side for the RCA cables.

for the earth, I drilled a hole into the boot close panel, and put an M10x25mm bolt through and attached the earth cable to that. Take a dremel/sandpaper to the surrounding area to get metal to metal contact

and then job's a goodun!

hope this helps.

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have been rummaging around and found what looks like an unused grommet in the engine bay (pass side) however I have yet to locate this from inside the car - (is that what you described when you were talking about the heater matrix?)
I guess the heater matrix is the circular box underneath the glove box?

If so then I should be able to run the cable through fairly easily like you say, the sills part does not sound too complex (thank god)

Cheers mate.

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

yeah the heater matrix is the big round thing, to the right of it there is a bit which leads off of it and if you put your hand through the gap you should feel the other side of it (only of you poke like a pair of pliers/ a screwdriver through the insulation material...) iirc its towards the left of the gap.

good luck.

do you have a normal wiring kit?

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

I've had another look at the bit to the right of the heater matrix but I couldn't find the gap you were talking about (I only had a quick look and it's dark)

I will have a better look tomorow, in the mean time I will buy the sub (only £70 delivered!!)

My friend has the same sub but wired up into a Nova (yuk!) but he said he will show me the right wiring kit to get, I presume I only need RCA and power cable and obviously the right power rating so that I don't blow the fuses!

Cheers.

HOW MUCH! Please tell me where you got it from as I'm thinking of getting one of these! That's cheap! Let me know how you get on/how it sounds! I'll probably run the same route in my Doblo.

Same guy as my mate got his from, they are graded items but he is a top seller and provides a great service.
My friends blew it's amp a few weeks after purchase and the seller sent him a new one within a week.

Hope that helps.

One thing I would reccommend is a speaker grille, as it doesn't come with one... I got one from Vibe - see signature for an idea of what it looks like.

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

Yeah I have been thinking about that, it's the only big downside to it. I will sort something out after I have installed it, I never put anything in the boot anyway!

Thanks for your help though mate, I will have a better look at installing it tommorow.

Which wiring kit did you buy?

Just the autoleads 8AWG one, I may upgrade to a 4AWG one later, but that does fine for now.

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

I hate to be a pain, but I have been looking for the grommet you are talking about above the heater matirx and havent found it yet!

I have found what looks like one lower down, just under the top of the carpet in the pass foot well, I think this is the one that I located from the engine bay.

It is about 2 inches wide and a inch tall, oval shaped'ish, there is some soft insulation material infront of it as you look from the engine bay, remove that and there is a rubber grommet that is unused.

Dunno if this is the one you were on about all along and its just me being a numpty though.....?

Hope the pics will enable you to point me in the right direction!

Shot from close up in bay: - see the bit with the foam/insulation hanging off...

Shot from slightly further away:

Shot from inside car in pass. footwell (holding back top of carpet) I think this is the corresponding grommet!

Cheers.

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

no it should be much higher than that... if you remove the carpet in the engine bay (battery side) there should be a 1" round grommet which is unused about 6 inches from the inner arch, I'll try and get a pic but it's a bit dark at the mo...

Re: Installing Fli 12 in Mk1 Punto ??

right, where the red spot is, there is a plasic "bolt" about 1" in diameter.

you unscrew this, and then peel back the carpet/insulation...

where the green spot is, there is a grommit about 1" in diameter which should be unused (it is on my punto, but it's just an "S" model. I don't think the higher spec models use it either (the sporting doesn't anyway)

EDIT - forgot to attach the pic, D'oh!
