have you fitted an aftermarket stereo? if so there usually not compatible without an adapter,
there be fiited with wire, try popping off the middle of the steering wheel, usually have to push some clips from behind, with that off see if the wires all look good condition and check that a plug hasnt come out, and if the remotes a seperate wire that plugs in the stereo check it hasnt come out and oh yeah it would also be usefull if we knew what car you had

Marea 1.8 elx '97 Rwill give the steering wheel a look later today

It may be a fiat radio, but not all models work with the steering wheel controls. try looking in the marea forum for the answer.. good luck.
