What do I need to fit my head unit?

I have a fiat punto 1.2 3dr sporting (Y-Reg). The stereo is the original blaupunkt one and it has never been changed. I have just bought the following head unit http://www.online-caraudio.co.uk/shop/cd-mp3-head-units/pioneer/pioneer-deh-4200sd-cd-mp3-head-724382.html aswell as a facia adaptor and an arial adaptor.

Apart from this, is there anything else I will need to replace the current original stereo with my new pioneer head unit. I keep reading on the internet about wire harnesses and removal keys e.t.c and its all a bit confusing.

Could someone please explain exactly what I will need to fit my new head unit.

Thanks :D

Re: What do I need to fit my head unit?

Keys are to remove the old one. There are 4 holes in the side of the HU. Just push something like a bent piece of coat hanger wire into them if you dont want to buy the keys.

You dont need a harness as Fiat are ISO as standard. You just need to unply the red (will be on bullet connectors) and plug it into the corresponding yellow wire on the new HU's harness.

Fitting a new head unit

If im fitting a head unit to my car, do i need to disconnect the battery? Some sites say its vital some say you dont need to? Am I going to electrocute myself or damage the car if i dont disconnect the battery?

Cheers

Yes disconnect it, i blew a fuse just checking the connections on the back of mine by not disconnecting it and im glad i didnt do any more damage than that

Im currently trying to fit my new head unit and its proving more difficult than i first thought. I have the head unit, which im assuming is already secured in a mounting cage. I also have a facia adaptor and an empty slot on the dashboard with all the wires coming out. Is it as simple as fitting the facia, plugging the wires in the back of the head unit and sliding it in. The part thats confusing me is when you slide the head unit, why doesnt it fall down the back, what is supporting it behind the dashboard?

Please help me.

its like a cavity in the dashboard with small holes either side at the back for wires thats why it dont fall back, it is as simple as that but coz the puntos headunit runs off a different system to most (CAN BUS) so it wont switch off with the engine you will have to do it manually or remove the face plate so be careful you dont drain your battery

It doesnt fall down the back because the cage has a lip on it that buts up to the lip on the fascia adaptor.
You need to remove the unit from the cage that is wraped around it. Insert that into the fascia so its flush. Then you will see little cutout shapes in the cage. Push some of these in so the cage cant just simply be pulled out (for security purposes)
Then unplug the red wire on your new head unit and plug it into the spare yellow.
Plug it in and check it works.
Push the wires into all the nooks and crannies behind the dash to allow as much room as possible for the HU to fit.
Put the head unit in until you here the click of the clips locking.

Thanks guys that really helpful, I understand how to do it now, sadly im being held back by the fact that the facia will not clip into the dash. No matter how hard i push the facia in, it just pops back out, and its the second facia i have tried now, its the most frustrating thing! Considering giving up now !

Your probably missing something its difficult to remember what i do in these situation. Just look for something stoping it ffrom cliping in. Where do you live?

I dont see how i can be missing something, i can see exactly how i work, but its as though the clips arent long enough, and no matter how hard i push the facia in it just wont clip, and just pops straight back out. I live in portsmouth. Its so frustrating, and fiat are charging 30 quid for a genuine fiat part, which is so expensive.

Thats what i mean, a lot of them are like that and there is normally a nack. You didnt by any chance buy the cheapest one possible from ebay did you?
Portsmouth is way to far away for me to have a look at.

I know, but however hard i try i cant seem to find the knack. It just doesnt seem to want to fit. The one i bought from was halford, and it was an autoleads facia, which apparently often has fitting issues. Im just going to order the genuine fiat one and hope that fits. Also, one other question, my new head unit came in a cage, do i need to take it out of the cage and fit the cage into the facia first, or can i leave it in the cage and just slide the whole thing into the fascia. If i have to remove the cage from the head unit, how would i do this?

The unit should have come with some little metal keys that slot in and release the HU from the cage.
If the Hellfrauds one dont fit take it back and let them know. (y)

Huh? It didnt come with any keys to remove it from the cage. Im confused now as to how to get it out the cage. Weird.

Head Unit Issue

Hi guys, im trying to fit a head unit to my new car, and its proving quite difficult. I bought a pioneer head unit, and it came already secured in a cage. I also have the new facia adaptor ready to clip into the dashboard. Once I have fitted the facia, do i just slide the headunit (already secured in cage) into the facia. Some people are saying i need to reomve the head unit from the cage and put the cage in the facia first (so that you can bend some clips or something), but i do not see how you would remove the HU from the cage, there is no clear release mechanism and the head unit did not come with any removal keys. I guess my main question is how do you stop someone from being able to just pull the head unit out of the hole in the dash, something must secure it from the back.

Re: Please Help, Head Unit Issue!

You will need to remove the cage first. Usually is hold on the sides and a screwdriver will be enough to release the cage from the HU. Once install you could scew the unit from the rear, but not many bother doing this.

Re: Please Help, Head Unit Issue!

as said above,
if you want to remove the cage get a small flathead screw driver and there are little slots at the side of the headunit that the cage sits into and just pop it out.
then when you put the cage in there are loads of little cuts in the cage that you can bend when in position to prevent the cage being removed easily.

personally i would advise not doing this, just my opinion here but from experience it seems that if a thief wants the radio they will take it.
i have seen dash been ripped apart to take the radio, thievies dont care about your car.
the best thing to do, which i always did, was to remove the fascia from the headunit everynight and whenever in a dodgy looking area.
the headunit on its own is no good really to a thief unless they can get a fascia, and at worst if they do steel the headunit your dash isnt in bits (y)

Re: Please Help, Head Unit Issue!

Not being funny but if your not 100% sure on how to do something simple like get the stereo out of a cage I would not recommend that you fit any audio equipment yourself, get someone in the know or if you have money goto Halfrauds or Audio Island and get them to do it.

Re: Please Help, Head Unit Issue!

Did you not get removal keys with the Pioneer? I got 2 with mine...

Be careful, radios dont take abuse very well. Once you have the bracket off (or cage if you want) put the facia first then bracket. Fit flush then bend in the appropiate pins. Connect and slide the unit in (you may need to get a female iso block for the Pioneer loom?) slide in and put on the plastic surround. Job done (y)
