Question Reverse mounted subwoofer...

ok, ive been wondering about this for quite a while, and thought i'd bring it to the table with you guys.

all things considered, there is a specific volume requited in a box behind a standard mounted subwoofer, should this volume remain the same when the sub is inverted?

should the sub be wired the opposite way round... so as to make the cone run the opposite direction to as it would if mounted standard.

can a smaller (obviously not drastically smaller) enclosre be used?

sound differences? better worse?

i have 2 pioneer tws306c subwoofers... usually standard mounted... would they be suitable to flip and reverse mount?

thanks, hope to hear some interesting replies (apologies for the ramble lol)

Re: Reverse mounted subwoofer...

Your specs should give you the subs displacement.

If they need 0.75ft3 with sub, and the sub displacement is 0.15ft3, then you want 0.60ft3. However, sometimes an oversized box can give a flatter response and better SQ, with a slight drop in power handling.

Technically you need to flip the phase too, but try it both ways and see which sounds best.

Sounds different? Possibly, but you'd have to have a very keen ear to tell.

Re: Reverse mounted subwoofer...

No you don't.

I ran my Macdaddy out of phase for months with no problems.

Re: Reverse mounted subwoofer...

Spose it depends on the kind of set up you have then. Looks like a little research is in order to find the science behind it then. WTS
