Help tuning EQ on stock MK1 Punto

Hey all,

I recently picked up a second hand MK1 Punto S60 and am having some problems with the sound system.

Everything works, I'll say that much.

However when I bought it, it came with a pair of Infinity 6x9 9603i speakers mounted on the boot lid. They weren't wired in - but have since been wired in and sound comes through fine.

The system I now have is: the aforementioned 6x9s at the back, the stock tweeters on the front dashboard and what I take to be the stock tape deck. I'm using a MP3 player to tape cassette adapter which also works as well as can be expected, as does the sound reproduction from the MP3 player. Using the same adapter and MP3 player on my previous car, audio reproduction was fine.

I'm having some trouble balancing the sound EQ settings to get the best possible sound. On some songs the bass is muffled, on others the vocals can't be heard. I find myself constantly switching the settings around to try and get it sounding the best, but improving it on one song seems to make it worse on others.

I have four settings to choose from on the cassette player:

Bass + / -
Treble + / -
Balance + / -
Fade + / -
There's also a "Loud" function, the volume for the cassette player and the volume on the mp3 player itself.

In short - a whole host of different options that seem to improve / make the audio worse. However I'm still having trouble nailing the "right" universal setting and was wondering if anyone had any advice for this sort of set up.

I don't want to throw more money at the system - so upgrading to a better CD player with AUX input is out of the question right now. Fitting an amp is also out. What I've got is what I've got...

Anyone have any bright ideas?

the sound setup usually depends on what you listen to, also what are the ranges on the settings for the bass/trebble etc?

Re: Help tuning EQ on stock MK1 Punto

What I listen to may be a problem in itself... it could be anything from Pendulum (drum and bass) to something like Muse (rock) or Oasis or even something classical.

As for the ranges - they go from -9 to +9 with "0" being the default.

So setting the fade to -9 will have all the sound coming from the rear 6x9s and nothing coming from the front. Setting it to +9 will have everything coming from the front and nothing from the rear.

Re: Help tuning EQ on stock MK1 Punto

ok well I listen to a fair range of music as well from Pendulum to Metallica and I found that 80% treble and 50% bass amplification works well with about 80% of the power coming through the back works best with my setup.

I'm running 45W per channel with stock speakers at the front (till I find the replacements I bought a while ago) and some Infinity Reference 9623i (100W RMS) 6x9's in the back.
