You know better than me: MK2 Punto Audio advice

Hey Fiat Forum, my first post on here! Glad to be part of the community.

First things first, I'm the proud owner of a 1.2 MK2 Punto, it's my first car and I can't wait to take my test in two weeks (wish me luck) to take her (the car that is!) out. Took the Punto for its first MOT yesterday, passed, so all happy there.

Now let's get down to business...

I have £200 (Excluding fitting/wiring costs) to spend on a decent audio system. The Punto currently has the standard blaukpunt tape player, 165mm woofers, and the tweeters located in the doors. As we all know these are rubbish to say the least. Did some searching around the net for some speakers and a head unit and was wondering if anyone could help me out and advise me on what to do...

So to replace the head unit...
http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/prod...ib_p-22557.htm

I like this headunit because it can directly connect up to my iPod and once I get bored of the iPod it can happily accept any aux in for any new mp3 player.

Then speaker wise, I'm looking for nice quality, nothing too loud and powerful, I just simply want to enjoy the music...
to replace the 165mm door speakers,
http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/prod...76_p-20290.htm
I don't know much about them, wondering if anyone has ever purchased these? Or know if they're utter tat!??

and then was thinking about sticking some small speakers in the rear slots, 100mm I believe?

http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/prod...-2_p-22997.htm

One problem though, I don't know if this is common with many Puntos but there are no rear speaker wires. I haven't pulled out the headunit yet to check if there's any behind there. There's simply rear speaker grills.

I will be purchasing everything in around 2 weeks from now, if anyone can give me tips, advice etc, that would be greatfully appreciated!

I don't know much about car audio systems also.

Cheers for reading this long post,

Matthew Hemmaty

hi! welcome to the forum
i wouldn't bother with rear speakers as you won't be sitting in the back,
the hu seems ok, it has preouts for future expansion (adding amps and sub)
i don't think the front speakers will fit as there 170mm you need 165mm also you'll be better off with components (seperate tweeter and midbass) i have similar to these in my mk2 http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jbl-...7c-p-5135.html

Re: You know better than me: MK2 Punto Audio advice

Major thanks for the reply, appreciate it.
D'OH! I thought the speakers I selected might have been able to squeeze in, but it's cool! I'm after any speakers that sound good! (and fit) hehe.
forgive my stupidity, so with the speakers you chosen as an example, Does that mean the main 2-way woofer would fit in the 165mm lower door section of the MK2 and the small tweeter will replace the current speakers in the upper section of the door?

So with the headunit I selected it has, Max. output power (watts) MOSFET 4 x 50 Watt

So I'm guessing those 4 channels will be 2 for the woofers 2 for the tweeters?

Thanks a million!

Matt

yes the speakers fit as you said, the tweeters are bigger than standard but will fit, they run off the front channel only, the wires connect to the crossover box then to the relevent speaker

Re: You know better than me: MK2 Punto Audio advice

Nice, really interested in those speakers, will save a pretty penny too!

Crossover boxes? Sorry whaaaaaaa...? I'm not drunk honest!

I'll have a guess at what you're saying

I'm guessing that I'll take two outputs from the HU one left channel one right channel. One right channel will go into a Crossover box which will then seperate that Right channel into the woofer 2-way and the tweeter and the same for the left channel. This is probably utter rubbish to you, ha ha.

Maybe the help of a professional diagram using PAINT might help!

This are just guesses as to what a crossover box is, its purpose etc.

sheesh what a n00b!

a crossover basically is two capacitors in a box. the one blocks all the higher frequencies and only allows lower frequencies to the woofer. the other blocks the lower frequencies and only allows the higher to the tweeter.

Ahh, thanks, makes sense.
So my impression is that it's...

http://h1.ripway.com/Hemmaty/Crossoverlayout.JPG

If so, time to find a nice decent component system between £50-80. wooo!

Thanks again to everyone for their help and knowledge!

They sound good, but do they SOUND good? Like what I did there? ha ha...

In other words, has anyone had experience with SPL Dynamics? Or even this set? Any ideas if they're compatible with the MK2 Punto in terms of size yada yada?

yay my car has its first service(since I purchased it) this weekend!

Time to find insurance quotes...ugh!!!

Thanks again for your time,

Matt

Re: You know better than me: MK2 Punto Audio advice

Yea you can get a nice set of speakers for your money!
i'd maybe go for 6x9's imo, i got some Infinity Reference REF 9603I, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Infinity-Refer...QQcmdZViewItem
very affordable just £40 brand new, but if your after just front component speakers...
go for a good name, in my opinion again Infinity is the better name. quality assured!

Re: You know better than me: MK2 Punto Audio advice

Wayhay, there's me never actually heard of Infinity before. (I know nothing about car audio speakers)

Read reviews and stuff and people are ravin' about those speakers. I'm just worried because they're 2-way they won't sound as good, but a reviewer said they sound better than many 3-ways.

So with a budget of £80 for components you reckon I should get them? Very tempted now... ha ha.

Thanks again, oh and how much do speakers + head unit generaly cost to fit? Or is that a rediculous question and this is a DIY job?

they'll fit as 6.5" = 165.1mm, the tweeter will be a tight fit you might have to cut some plastic from the housing
