ok so I have a flip front kenwood h/u and turned it round the other day and it turned on and played but there's nothing on the screen and non of the buttons work so obviously the ribbon connector between the stereo unit and front has broken also the phono plugs on the back have been cut off buy the guy i bought it off for some reason

what I would like to know is if anyone has had a similar stereo repaired and how much it cost including sending off and postage costs ect

I am aiming to have the front repaired and the plugs on back replaced if possible

I know of a repair place that charged 40quid for a previous repair I had on a similar stereo but just thought id see if I could have it done any cheaper

or is there any way I can repair it myself if parts i.e. ribbon connector are available to order as I have a few friends that can easily do this kind of thing for me or even do it myself as I have had a few electrical things apart in my time

Parts availablity depends on the model of the headunit. You might find a ribbon on eBay or directly from Kenwood themselves. Paying a pro 40 quid for repair isn't a bad price TBH.

£40? ive seen more expensive!
Its pretty good repair price. Phone Kenwood with your model number to see if they do parts or if they can get them for you. and compare the price of the parts with a repair. Bare in mind your mostly paying for labour with repairs

it's a kdc 5090r

KE0720N0602278

thanks for all your advice i have emailed kenwood spares department for parts

to see if I can get it

ill keep you updated as to what I finally decide to do and how much I end up spending on it

I just had a closer look at the point were the ribbon comes under most stress and it has actually ripped in 2 slightly at one edge so it's a definite cause of the failure

an update on my stereo situation

well I took it apart today first off to remove the cd that was in it and also to remove the ribbon as I have decided to do it myself it was surprisingly easy to remove

if anyone would like I will post some pictures of my progress

I am sourcing parts from ebay as there seems to be allot of them for sale

so it looks like it will only be costing me about 16 quid pluss postage to do it not bad ay

the conclusion

after some tantalising fine soldering work to transfer the connector block to the new ribbon I now have sound again so stereo repair in total has cost me 15 quid
very pleased with myself now saved me self a fortune on repares

Sorry, just came across this thread as I've been absent for some time now! This happened with my KDC7080R and I found a place called 'Just Kenwood' I think, that do the ribbon cables etc.

I'm sure that there will be places for other makes as well.
