Ipod - Without a Head Unit

Hello all,

Can anyone confirm if my theory is correct please...

Can I use my Ipod going direct to an amp (using a wire where one end is headphone socket & the other is RCA lead) to play music to my car speakers.

I don't want a headunit, the idea would be to just plug my ipod in when driving and take it with when I leave the car.

What would I do with the remote wire on the amp?

All help appreciated

Thank you

I dont see why it shouldn,t wotk, just wire the remote wire to an ignition feed like the cigar lighter for example that way it just comes on with the ignition and wont drain your battery.

Re: Ipod - Without a Head Unit

Thanks for the speedy response, that was the plan just wanted to check in case it was a no no before spending some money on an amp.

I don't huge sound just something for the longer journey. Also no headunit to worry about (getting stolen) when i'm not with my car.

cant do that!

an amp will only accept 3-4v as a remote. anything bigger can fry an amp

Re: Ipod - Without a Head Unit

Cheers for the advice, how would you suggest I wire the remote? Can I use a relay/switch or something similar?

for me the main stumbling point is controlling the ipod.IMHO its just not safe to be using the ipod controls while driving.

Re: Ipod - Without a Head Unit

I drive to work in the mornings and the journey lasts about 40 mins. won't really need to control the ipod apart from turning it on when I leave home and turning it off when I get to work.

Ipod with a remote control would be a good idea ;-)

Re: Ipod - Without a Head Unit

the mention of remotepower lead is very similar situation to that in my turning on amp without headunit...
how is best to reduce voltage to the required 3-4v required?
cheers

Re: Ipod - Without a Head Unit

I hardly believe that an iPod has more than 3V output voltage. It would damage the headphone. Anyway, you have volume setting on the iPod and probably you have input sensitivity on the amp too. I see no problem with this setup, in fact I think it grantes great SQ too, no unnecessary unit in the chain.
