Ok, my wife's 1.9 Sporting has developed a whistling noise when the turbo spools up.

It's hard to tell but it seems the noise is coming more from the passenger side.

The turbo is mounted at the front of the engine and is slightly more to the drivers side so I'm wondering if the 1.9 has a side mounted intercooler which might have sprung a leak.

Anyone know or had similar problems?

Not heard of any, had a works mundano TD slip a tubro hose before, that whistled like hell and was cuppled with a large loss in the meager power.

PS does the GP have a intercooler cannot remember seeing one, far too windy to look

There doesn't seem to be any noticeable loss of power.

I'm not sure. The intercooler on the 156 I used to have was tucked in beside the wing and wasn't easily seen. I can't see into that side of the Punto engine bay to check.

YOU do get quite a lot of turbo whistle on these cars though, could it be that you just did not notice it before. Sometimes I forget mines whistles as much as it does, then other times its really noticable. Maybe one for T?

The majority of turbocharged engines emit a whsitle as the turbo speeds up. My old Pug HDI turbo whistled when the revs went up.

If you think it is excessively noisy then take it to a dealer to see if one of the hoses has split/come off, if not, find a long tunnel, open the windows and keep prodding the throttle to enjoy it :D

The Sporting i drove also made a woosh noise when changing gear at high revs. Sounded a bit like a dump-valve but the dealer couldnt tell me if they were fitted with one or not.

Yeah you can hear a slight whistle but shouldn't be too excessive. Also the Intercooler is integrated with the radiator its a dual unit I know as I had the bumper off mine to change a fog bulb :(.

Now thats why I couldnt find mine

The noise is a loud high pitched whistle and very annoying. It's only started happening recently so is definitely not normal. Had a poke about under the bonnet and drove the car last night; guess what? It run as quiet as a mouse  (well as quiet as a diesel can be ;) )

The car is booked in for next week but I'll see how it goes between now and then.

the turbo whistle on mine is louder when the weather is cold and the engine is fully warmed up, are you sure its not just that? when i get in the car in the morning i can never hear it

After jiggling the various air inlet pipes the noise went away for a couple of days. It is now back intermittently. The car is booked in for Wednesday so we'll see what happens.

I should have updated this last week but just to let you know that the dealer had the car for two days to locate the problem. It turns out there is a pipe that needs replaced and it's on order.

I don't know the exact details (wife picked the car up) but I'll let you all know more when it's sorted.

Whistling noise now cured

A couple of weeks ago I posted about a whistle from my wifes Grande Punto Sporting when the turbo was on boost.

We finally got round to getting the car booked in and it is now fixed. The job card said "flexible sleeve replaced" if that means anything.
