The current "Which Magazine" Car Guide (2006/2007) on page 17 points out that whilst the Grande Punto scores well in the EURO NCAP safety tests, this was achieved with left-hand-drive model, which included a metal sheet inside the steering column to help to protect the driver's knee in case of accident. This sheet was missing from earlier right-hand-drive models. Fiat claim to have included it in all models built from the end of June 2006, and "Which" is working with Euro NCAP to prompt Fiat to recall Grande Puntos built before this date.

I am with Clarkson on this one. If a metal spike shot out of the steering wheel, and not an airbag, everyone would drive a lot more carefully....

Yea too f**king right. Saw some filthy scrote chav last night spin his car 4 times of the road across a grass verge and into a bush which snapped his wheel of his axel and killed a poor rabbit. There is something seriously wrong when you can loose control that much in a 1.2 corsa......

Thats the problem with modern cars, they make you feel like superman. Modern cars (Fiats Inc) make you feel cocooned in your little "safety cell" and people fell invincable. A element of danger helps to keep you sharp, with all these driver aids I think people get over confident, and once the computer cant help you its probably too late. Also because of traction control esp ebd (blah blah) people are loosing real driving skills, candice braking, using opps. lock etc because they do not have "little moments" to deal with and get experience, the computer just does it. If a car keeps you slightly on edge, and you know that if think if it goes wrong at this speed on this corner that you probably will die, you would slow down.

Thats why I like track days so much, a chance to see how a car behaves on the limit and beyond, so hopefully if something does go wrong you have a better idea of what to do.

Totally agree there too :). A track / rally day saved my life. Was driving my dads Audi A4 and was taking a hairpin bend in the wet admittedly a little to fast and the arse end went out and I had to catch with with some opp lock. You wouldn't believe how good it felt :). It's made me a better driver....

As humans we crave danger, gives us an adrenalin rush, and that’s the problem with safe cars. We need that feeling, so people start driving recklessly, to get the feeling of danger back. It’s a shame insurance companies don’t understand this and make it easier to insure cars for track use. It’s a lot safer to get it out of your system on the track plus you hone your driving skills.(y)

Off topic but I should be off to my next track day in October, I wont be driving the GP this time but should be having a play in a couple of Vindicators:D :D :D
