Hi everyone. Curious to know if anyone else had this problem.

Fiat punto 1.9jtd 2006

Part of why it failed mot was parking brake efficiency low or not working. Got new handbrake cables went to fit realised rear drivers calliper was knackered so ordered and replaced this along with the rest of the mot fails. Puts it back in and it failed again still not enough. Took it home stripped it down as guided by garage so everything looked fixed took it back and now told that passengers side has 200% efficiency and drivers side only 100%.

Any ideas or thoughts ?

They said it's maybe not gripping so they're going to rough up pads and clean disc.

I'm confused as to how such a massive difference in percentage

May sound like a daft question but, does it hold the car back when you pull away with it on and are the new cables adjusted properly? Pads could be glazed if one side has been binding so maybe a good idea to rough them up a bit unless you changed them when doing the caliper?

Mine was failed on handbrake (drums on it) and I can only conclude that the garage were at it. I took the drums off and blew the dust out then cleaned up and sprayed the drums so they looked new. Passed no issue on retest despite not feeling any different to me....

Cheers

The handbrake test is more complex than it used to be.
The details of the vehicle being tested are entered into the gov system which returns an efficiency figure that has to be met . This is in order that if the vehicle has to be decelerated solely using the hand brake it can decelerate at a minimum rate. There are also rules for how balanced the handbrake action is on each wheel the handbrake acts upon.

Hey, yea the car doesn't move when the hand brake is applied and I try to drive the rear end drops as if it's working fine. The garage have the car and say they're going to rough them up tomorrow didn't change them when doing the calliper as initially it failed and all I got told was handbrake cables need replaced (I only noticed my self that the calliper was seized due to it failing on the wheel bearing too. Yea when I got the car back after the failed mot today the garage took me thru the correct steps to make sure everything was checked and adjusted correctly and they checked it before the hand brake test all adjusted fine. Says he watched it on rolling road himself and the drivers rear was non existent.

Either your garage is having a laugh or doing the hand brake test incorrectly and they are getting false readings. I would take it to another garage and see what they say. Get Kiwk Fit or similar to do a brake check and ask them to specifically check the handbrake function.
