Hey guys.

This is helping out.my.cousin. He is foreign and only lived in this.country for last 2 years.

But he took his car in for an MOT test. From what I can see he passed the emissions (diesel) test. But then has a fail for 'major exhaust leak (7.1.2).

Surely if he passed.emmisions test then how can there be a.major leak?

I've attached pictures of the mot results
Amy help would be great guys.

Diesel emissions test is quite simple, mostly just looking for excessive smoke. Emissions form tailpipe are apparently ok.

The failure form says leak at flexi joint. So exhaust if leaking out. It shouldn't. So it needs a new flexi coupling. Plus the other bits.

Rear lamp issue is probably poor earth connections, either in a bulb holder or the earth from the lamp to the body.

Thanks for your input bill. Do you think one of those patch jobs would be good enough to pass mot. I be heard of a Holts gun gum flexi wrap or fibre fix heat wrap.

Gun Gum won't fix this. you need either a new front section or a repair flexi joint section like this

:yeahthat:

Must replace, can't repair, due to its flexible nature.

As a general rule, exhaust paste or repair paste is a get-you-home measure and should be repaired properly as soon as possible.

Source a good replacement flexi and it'll last years. If you have a stainless exhaust shop anywhere near, might try a stainless one, although they are still subject to the flexing, so don't last forever either.

Whilst under there, check all the engine mountings. Try to determine if the flexi has failed due to age, or perhaps flexing too much.

Hey guys well I say about a patch job because my cousin goes back home in about a months time. So obvs he don't want to spend loads getting work done. Anyone know how much a fair estimate of a flexi repair would be ,

The flexi joint is made of two parts (and the flanges):

- internal corrugated pipe, to allow some flexibility
- external sleeve: wire mesh that still allow flexi and protect from heat and deposits in the inner pipe ripple

In your case the internal layer is probably broken and you can't use external "gummy paste" since you'd had to have it all over the flexi mesh.
Excessive play in the engine mounts will break this join in first, which make that failure a good indication of other coming troubles; as Bill said have the mounts inspected as well !
