This car is really annoying me now.

I drove back from Lancashire to Aberdeen this week and since I've got back it is louder and when starting the car up the rev counter is higher than usual and takes longer for them to reduce when accelerating.

On the way back my engine light came on when I went over 70. (Possible miss fire)

Im not sure if this is related or not but I can't keep paying out for this heap and not getting anything back in return. This thing hates me!

What do you mean by 'is louder' ? Engine noise, rolling noise, gearbox noise, exhaust noise, other ... ?
When you say (possible miss fire), is it that you've OBDed the ECU ?

A leaking exhaust pipe could fool the lambda (O2) sensor(s) so the ECU will try to over-compensate, resulting in bad combustion / strange engine behaviour... It's one possibility.

What do you mean OBDed? Im only thinking misfire because the engine light flashed and that seems to be the common fault when looking on the forums.

I now sound like a boy racer! Also, when slowing down I hear very faint pops when taking foot off accelerator. Like when you have one of them sport exhausts but not as loud. I couldn't see any obvious holes when looking under the car.

I should also point out that if I'm in neutral and I put my foot on the accelerator and then remove my foot it doesn't make the noise. Only when I've been moving.

By OBDed I meant ran an On Board Diagnostic session: if your engine light came on, that's because the Engine Control Unit has detected something wrong with some engine parameter (could be a O2 sensor as I said), usually the ECU keeps track of this kind of fault, so one should be able to tell a bit more about car's history...

Oh I get you, so I guess I should buy an OBD reader so I can find out the error code. Any recommendations?

Or would any major garages check for free?

I doubt any garage will do that check for free. Best you can find on the market (IMO) is from MultiEcuScan, there is a free version which very limited, specially for GPs, but the payed version is very affordable; for the interface itself (cable) you need a "MES modified / ready" one and if you want to go further in fault analysis (ABS, Power Steering, Body computer etc.) at least the yellow adapter (#3). That may sound like chinese but you'll find those words in the descriptions on e-bay..

Thank you, that software is 50 Euros from the looks of it, after buying the actual scanner and then the software it would probably be cheaper taking it to a garage surely?

I can't afford to be spending more and more on this, I was hoping to find a cheap option like under £20

What about something like this? (FIAT FAULT CODE READER ENGINE SCANNER DIAGNOSTIC RESET TOOL OBD 2 CANBUS EOBD UK)

That's affordable for me in my current situation

As soon as you can read the code, you'll have the indication. What I'm not sure is that this particular tools will read the stored fault !

Anyone ?

Can't comment on the reader , I put the words into ebay and it came up with a generic unit for about £20. Multiecuscan does so much more for about £60-70.
Sounds like you have a blown exhaust. Possibly the flexible section. lot's of info in GP section, do a search. Kwik-fit will do an estimate for free which will tell you if an exhaust part is broken.
Where are you located? Maybe someone (Me if near Cambridge) can run Multiecuscan for you.

It might seem like I am being a cheap skate but unfortunately £60 is quite a lot to me at the moment. I've read about it being a blown exhaust but I don't think it matches up with all my symptoms.

The car drives fine, I haven't noticed an increase in fuel consumption. I am located in Aberdeen so quite quite away from you haha.

I've just come across this after looking at old MOT's

"front exhaust flexy gauze split and corroded at mountings"

Could this be it possibly? :chin:

(I'm going to check service history when I get home)

As I told before, exhaust issues can fool the O2 sensor...

Sorry, I'm really new to cars haha and it's confusing me, but as you said it can fool the 02 sensor if there are exhaust issues, so surely it could possibly be damage to the flexi pipe and that would fool the O2 sensor?

Yes, because the sensor would not feel the real amount of remaining oxygen in the exhaust gas (because of the leak). Normaly there are two sensors, one before the catalyser and one after and they should somehow match their reading; the one after is located past the flexi pipe so if that one becomebroken / leaking, it MAY cause your problem. Don't take that an affirmation, it's just a possibility !

I will whack it on the kerb this weekend and have a closer look and see if I can see anything. I am going to be out of action for a couple of months anyway so car is going to be stationary for a while. It just needs to last me until March next year

You can get flexi repair pipes for about £25. e.g.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111433993065
NOT a recommendation of seller and I don't know what engine you have, up to you to choose a suitable part.

I was looking at them earlier but I don't feel confident enough cutting off the previous one and I've also heard the clamp ones slip?

So I'm going to sound a numpty but that looks like some kind of sleeve around the flexi pipe. It looks like it's been mauled by a lion and looks like it has slipped off slightly. Is this just a protection cover?

Looks like your flexi joint is on it's way out. Suggest you go along to an exhaust place and ask them to do an exhaust check...nothing more. They will probably try and sell you exhaust but just walk away. You can go under the car and have a look and see if it is that and see the condition of the rest of the car.
