I'm new to this forum having bought a 58 plate Grande Punto 1.4 16v last week. Only 45k miles with service history etc.
Drives lovely. Smooth clutch and gear changes, however I've noticed a leak underneath. Tan coloured oil is leaking very slowly from under the gearbox nearest the diff cup / passenger side driveshaft. I dont think its the driveshaft seals on the gearbox because the oil is leaking from a point higher than the shaft. The diff cup and shaft are both dry, but the side of the gearbox is wet.
I've checked the gearbox oil level which was a little low, but only needed about 50ml.
I think gear oil is leaking from the gear selector shaft/rod seal. It is directly above the wet patch.
Also, I pulled back the rubber gator that covers the clutch slave cylinder rod and quite a lot of hydraulic fluid came out. I assume this means the seals in the slave cylinder have also perished.
The previous owner had overfilled the hydraulic fluid reserviour to the top!. so ive taken out enough to drop it to the max level mark.

My questions are: Is replacing the selector shaft seal a simple task,
and can I just replace the slave cylinder seals or should I get a whole replacement unit?
I hope that someone on here have fixed both these problems before and can give me some tips please.
Thanks very much.

Yep. The leaking oil is slippery and smelly. The area around the gear selector shaft (and its seal) is wet with it.
Difficult to replace or no?......

It appears the slave cylinder is completely plastic with no repair kits available. However a brand new replacement from carparts4less is only £33 quid at the moment. (y)
Just wondering how difficult the gear selector shaft seal will be to get out and replace. (n)

Will do....
Cheers.

Check your drive shaft boot (inner cv boot). This is on the opposite end of your CV boot at the wheel.
Crawl under the car and give it a squeeze to see if any air goes in and out. No air should be able to squeeze out. It could be that.
