Hi all,

Got a part-ex quote on my 08 plate Eleganza 1.4 8v today of £500 due to crunching going into reverse when it's first selected. £1000 was suggested minus the issue.

Dealer quoted so low as the crunching is apparently a sign of gearbox bearings or linkages on the way out - anyone inclined to agree?

Only other info I can really give is that my mechanic suggested a new clutch would need to be looked at within 12 months and that was last September.

Thanks in advance!

It's sign of clutch dragging slightly, not bearings or linkage in my opinion.
Take it to your mechanic and ask him/her.

Or sign that someone not pausing for a second or two after pressing clutch pedal all the way down before engaging reverse.

The clutch role is to make internals of gearbox stop rotating when shifting gears (kind of).

A worn clutch (disk) will still insulate the GB from the engine, so will NOT make the GB crunch.
A lose cable, the carpet rolled up under the pedal (have seen it!) or air in the system for hydraulic type would allow only a partial disengagement >> GB crunching.

Of course worn synchromesh will also noisily complain when solicitated, same if oil is gone ...

But since reverse gear is missing synchromesh it's normal to grind the gear if the shaft is still rotating with the clutch all the way in.

From my experience on this car, the shaft takes some time to stop spinning, like 2-3 seconds, after the clutch pedal is on the floor.

It's not a problem, it's a feature.:D

BUT, if let's say, you keep the pedal on the floor for 5 seconds and then you still fell/hear/grind the reverse gear (and only the reverse) then it's a problem related to clutch system.

Most of the times it's something on the hydraulics, like air in the system, bad slave cylinder, bad master cylinder or worn out fork/bearing.

It COULD be a bad pressure plate but I doubt it.
For sure it's not a gearbox problem.

With the clutch held in for a few seconds before engaging reverse, there is no crunching. Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.

No problem.

If you go from 1st into reverse (obviously keeping clutch pedal down all the time )it won't crunch .

Sounds like dealer trying it on with you.
