Beat me to it Bill. Caveat emptor :)

Cars are sophisticated things and are always a gamble - and one thing I always bear in mind when buying any car used is why is the person selling it? 9 times out of 10 it's because something doesn't work, and you just need to work out what it is and how difficult it might be to fix it.

Anyway, that aside, now it's just worth focussing on the cheapest/best way to fix the problems. My two cents would be that I don't actually know of a Grande Punto EVER needing a new ECU, and that it most likely is a) connections (bad earthing) or b) battery (low battery thrws up all kinds of weird and wonderful errors). Andy Monty's done a good guide here, could be worth a shot. Seriously, hope it all works out for you.
