Hi guys as the title suggests had the box replaced a few weeks ago on the punto 1.2 for a recon unit and since then theres been a sort of creack when goin from first to second and under load sometimes..i thought it may have been from the selector on ghe box itself which u can see under the bonnet but it seems to be travelling under the car. Any help would be apprecited. Many thanks

Hi, I'm afraid the creak noise comes from the gearbox itself since a bad "engaging" cable would also have the same effect on 3rd - 4th...
I am pretty sure there ain't any adjustment possible on those cables, so if the symptoms appeared after the GB swap, I believe it is the culprit...

Hi bud thanks for the reply...yes it occasionaly does do it through other gears but more noticable in lowere gears.is it a cable thats the culprit or the actual gearbox? Is there any thing i can check or do to identify to confirm?
Many thanks

Hi Mate,

You need to check for excessive play at the cables/selector and cables/lever junctions, possibly also the brackets where the cables are fixed in the engine bay get lose/bent. You'll need some helper to manoeuvre the lever while you check on the other side, be carefull not to pinch your fingers !
BTW, a bad clutch (ie, not fully disengaging) would have similar symptoms...

Hi Bernie thanks again for the reply.
have some work to do then to find whats at fault.

now you mention the clutch..i have noticed when i put it in to first when i park up(handbrake a tad loose) it jolts forward slightly?

the clutch was new prior to the box being replaced probs around 800 odd miles on it..it was cleaned properly before being put back on by the garage.

cheers

The car slightly jolting when engaging first gear means that the clutch is not fully disengaged.
First thing I'd do is bleeding the circuit to remove any air in the fluid. BTW, this fluid (shared with the brakes) DOES age (by absorbing air humidity) and need replacement every now and then.
If this doesn't give good results, the next would be the actuator and finally the pump itself.
What happens if you "pump" the clutch pedal several times BEFORE engaging the 1st gear ? If the pedal gets harder to push and the car doesn't jolt anymore, then you have air in the circuit...
Easiest thing is to bring the car to a friendly garage and ask for a clutch circuit bleeding, shouldn't cost much...
