Hi all,

Im new to the forum so hello everyone :) hope i will be able to help people too :)

we bought a little 1.3 multijet 2006, and we love the drive just a few little niggles that im hoping to put right.

first one been the gears, when selecting 1st gear its very hard to engage, i have to go to 2nd then 1st, now im thinking its a syncro problem. could some one please confirm,

second, the gear stick is very sloppy side to side ?

thirdly i think i have a glow plug down as the light flashes for a few seconds then goes off, what is the best way to remove them i have heard and read a few horror stories, I have bought some no nonsense oil penetrating oil, hoping someone on here has done it and could advise :)

well hopefuly speak soon , and thank you

J

Hi Jess & Nat (I guess) and welcome on board !

Nice introduction BTW, just missing the bhp to perfectly identify the car...

The gearbox on the GPs is driven by 'bowden' type cables (that can pull AND push) like direct-driven airplanes. One does the lateral, the 2nd one the longitudinal motions. Their ends are hooked to the gearbox and the lever with nylon-like connectors that can get worn while getting old and need (complete) replacement. An indication of wearing is the sloppy feeling and/or difficulty in selecting gear.
To my knowledge there is NO adjustement on those cables (NEED TO BE CONFIRMED)

I've answered last week or so to a post about glowplugs where I think I've covered all that could be. The only difference with your car and the 1.9 of the post is part locations: the relay is in front of the battery tray and the plugs are in front side of the engine. You'd still have to remove the airbox to access them ; if you work on the relay, be carefull there is a high current lead coming to it, definitely a MUST to disconnect the battery negative BEFORE disconnecting this line ! And remenber all glowplug jobs have to be done on COLD engine and with the EXACT CORRECT tools if you don't want to add to the horror stories records...

Hi Bernie

thanks for the reply. Yeah I had seen your post on the 1.9. Ours is the 75bhp

Could it just be the gear candles or likely to be the gear box gear one? I have ordered a 2009 gear box with only 25k which I am fitting Friday.

As for the glow plugs. Would it help soaking them in the rust penetrating oil? And I take it doing it on a cold engine will aid in removal?

From what I've seen a 8mm box spanner fits the plugs ? Is that right ?

Thanks again :)

Hi Jess,

" Could it just be the gear candles or likely to be the gear box gear one? "

sorry I don't get You here (my poor 'school' english) !? I find it a bit radical to order a new (used) gearbox without even having checked the command system !

Regarding the plugs I'm not sure about the tool size but my meaning was more about using the CORRECT (well shaped etc) tool, of course with the RIGHT size !!
Metal (actually not all of them) expand with heat, so you definitely have to do the plugs job on COLD engine, you could even freeze the plugs with liquid nitrogen or a cooling air can from computer shop held with head down to get the liquid off (mind your finger getting froozen !!) it should then easily come off, don't use brutal force !! Before that, let the unseizer work overnight...

Think I get it now...

gear candle: gear lever (stick) ?
gear box gear one: gearbox selection mechanism ?

If that, both sides have to be checked for excessive play or worn/bendedl/lose parts, one from engine bay, the other from underneath the car, under the gear shifter lever.

Hi.

Just an update.

While I had the gear box off i got them to put in a new clutch. Got the car back and it's like a brand new car !

I looked at the glow plugs but was so scared to brake them.

I tried using an 8mm box spanner but it didn't feel a good fit.

Hello. I (and many others I presume) have the sloppy gearbox problem with our 2008 1.3 Mjet diesel 75 hp ...clutch is fine. Gear change is ok in freezing conditions but veeery sticky and sloppy when the waether is warm. Like 1980's Volvo gears used to be (yes I am that old). My question is that

1. Will changing just the cable end bushes suffice?

2. If so, Where can they be purchased? Eper gives just the cables part nrs 55194346 and 55194777.

3. If I need to buy the cables where would I go surfing? Ebay had the around £60 a piece (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Punto-...e-55194346-Transmission-link-LV-/131167980388), which is nice but rather on the expensive side. Then again Fiating is seldom cheap.
Thanks for any useful help. -Andy
