Hey guys,
I was just wondering if any of you have ever had this happen. So on Friday night driving back from the chippy the car jumped out of gear thinking I hadn't pushed it in enough I put it back in gear and drove back it happened once more pulling up to the house. Yesterday driving to work it happened again and then I realised it wasn't just me not putting it into gear the car was jumping out itself.
It only happens in first gear and I can crawl in traffic but once start building speed it pops out into neutral.
Any ideas???

Could be a linkeage problem or weak detent spring/worn gears in gearbox, how many miles/klms?

You really have to pull it off (if it's well engaged), so I'd opt for a linkeage issue (cables already on 56 plates ??) or maybe a worn selector. What engine is it ?

BTW, first gear should only be used to start moving the car when you should still have your hand on the lever ...

Regards, Bernie

Thank you. It's a 1.2 engine. My father in law (van and lorry mechanic) is going to look at it for me just wondering if any fiat guys would be able to help :).
Yeah it pops out just before I would change to 2nd gear but I'd rather build a bit more speed up in first.

Sounds like your car has a C514 gearbox, wanna some drawings about it so Dad in law can have a look ?

Rgds, Bernie

The cable selector system works like this:

- selector cable: lever lateral motion, selects which gear group will be engaged (1-2, 3-4, 5-R)
- engagement cable: lever forward backward motion, engages 1-3-5 or 2-4-R

As it happens only in 1st gear, I believe the cable : selector system is not at fault, otherwise it would also happen in 3 & 5. The 1st and 2nd gears synchros are located on the secondary shaft away from the selector box, therefore they got the longest fork i.e the more prone to get bent :-(

I'm afraid you wont see anything wrong in the cable / selector system (unless very unlikely a worn 1st-2nd fork top slot) and need to get the gearbox off and open ...
Have Dad in law forgot the sledge hammer and 2" and more spanners at home if you plan to do the job yourself. Anyway here are a few screenshots.

Regards, Bernie.

Found another interesting cutaway view, it's a C514-6 speeds from a 500 so only a couple pinions more, but selector is very similar...
