A friend has a 57 plate Grande Punto Sport

It used to start fine then one day it wouldn't start and immobiliser just kicks in.

He bought a 2nd hand ECU along with the key/ignition and the clocks.

I changed the blade in the key so we didn't have to change the ignition and put the ECU on the car but it is the same.

If you turn the key quick it does turn over but the immobiliser light comes on, if you leave key turned forward without trying to start the car after a few seconds the light comes on

Do the clocks need to be changed as well also do we need to put the immobiliser reader off the new ignition on the car as well?

Thanks in advance for any help

What was wrong with the old ECU? Have you read any codes? No point in throwing parts at it without finding out the problem to start with. The symptoms described could be a crank sensor fault.

@ Digger 58: could camshaft sensor be as a suspect aswell ?
@ Paulgm: I believe all ECUs must be synched, can you perform a proxy alignment ?

Regards, Bernie

A chap came and plugged his laptop in to the car and said thew ECU wasn't reading the key.
He never found any other faults I don't think
Tried leaving the battery off for 30 mins...made no difference so was wondering is the clocks are part of the immobiliser live in a VW.

How do I do a proxy alignment?

Proxy alignment (synching the various CAN bus components) can be done with MultiEcuScan. What was your Chap's equipment to read the eOBD ??

Put the old ECU back on...

charge the battery

apply jump leads between battery negative and engine block and another from engine block to cars chassis....

try and start car

bad earthing can cause this issue and the ECU is acutally not at fault.. just not receiving the correct power supply due to a degraded earth aka negative

I have asked my friend to find out what software the chap used to read the faults...he is not sure if it read actaul faults or it was just something to see if the key was working...which it wasn't.

The 1st thing we tried was the battery/earth wire thing and that made no difference.

It was strange how it happened....the car started no problem...wasn't driven any where and next day this fault started??
