Hi Guys,

Recently bought a 1.9 GP and noticed on the drive home there was a loud grindy kind of noise above 40mph. The noise seems to change pitch with wheel speed rather than engine speed and appears to be coming from the front right which made me think: wheel bearing.

Took it to a garage and he says its a gearbox issue and cant do it (despite having my car for 9 days now) does this make sense if the noise doesnt change in relation to engine speed/clutch in or out/what gear im in?

Any one have any idea?

Cheers

Yeah its in all gears inc neutral. Only audible above 40mph, gets louder and higher pitch the faster you go.

There is no play in the wheels, I jacked it up and checked. However I saw a post by Ziggy122 that said he had a similar problem that was diagnosed as diff bearings only to be a wheel bearing.

I have a friend who used to have that, it ended up being something stuck in the air filter

Took it to a gear box specialist on the mechanics recommendation. Turned out to be a rear wheel bearing!!! despite the noise sounding like it was coming from the front. Really weird but all sorted now.
