Hi All,

Just looking for your experience.....

I have took my GP into the garage today as the clutch was making a metal on metal rubbing noise whenever the clutch was not compressed. The garage checked it out and said it was the clutch bearing, so the whole clutch needed replacing - Fair enough. I then get a phone call this afternoon from the garage stating "Sorry Sir, bad news your gearbox has gone also". So I already know that the car has had a replacement gearbox, as there is yellow writing on the current one, so it's either a recon or salvage. The car is coming up to being 10 years old, with 73k on the clock. Is this common for gearboxes to fail on GP so often, or am I just having bad luck, or the option I hope it's not, is the garage robbing me.

The gearbox seemed okay to use, sometimes it wouldn't go in to first gear, so I would come off the clutch and the second time it would go in. Also when selecting reverse, it would sometimes crunch. Neither of these I would put down to a complete failure of the gearbox? But I don't have the knowledge to know otherwise. Also the garage know, I need the car urgently as I go on holiday on Friday, so I have to drive 500 miles to Gatwick. Is this just a con, as they know, they have me over a barrel?

Let me know.

Cheers

Mine (also 1.2) is at almost the same mileage on its original 'box and clutch

If the box was OK before the garage took it off I'd be looking very clearly to understand what's broken
