Morning all,

Last night I was hit by a hit and run driver. I managed to get their number plate but the driver was car was not registered to an owner and had no insurance or tax. Therefore, I now need to determine whether to go through my insurance or repair it myself. I have had a good look this morning, and it looks to me like it is just bumper damage. However I am no mechanic, so does anybody have any opinion on the damage below?

Thanks Josh

Hopefully it is just a new bumper, but you should get the rear quarter checked, just incase the impact has damaged a crumple zone or worse, twisted the chassis, in the worst case case your most likely looking at the car being written off. But fingers crossed its just superficial.

your insurance company have access to a uninsured drivers policy, which was set up by the government, it's basically a big pot of money which all insurance companies pay into to help drivers who have been involved in a hit and run (no info from the other party) or uninsured vehicles. Even though you would be making a claim, since this isn't classed as your fault it shouldn't effect your premium a great deal.

As above post
I would go with your insurance get it repaired and checked properly ;)
who knows whats going on underneath ;)
I had someone run into mine recently just appeared to be bumper scuffs and a small crack in front wing (where a bodge repair had been done by previous owner):bang:
It had to have all new clips/brackets for bumper plus a new wing a new tyre :D
paint and labour over £1200 and a courtesy car for a week :slayer:
glad it doesnt affect my no claims

Legally you have to tell the insurance company even if do not want to make a claim. The effect, if any, on your premium is the same if you claim or not. You presumably have told the police, so the insurance compay could easily find out and this coud have much worse impact (cancelled insurance, rejected future claim) than making a claim.

Thanks Robert for your reply! Believe it or not this is completely the opposite to what the police told me last night. They advised me to not go through my insurance as it would impact my premium when I renew.

Hi,
I'm not a lawer, but have some training in application technical legislation, so do your own research. It is my understanding tht you have to advise your insurer of any material fact that may affect the policy. I do know that my wife hit a parked car last year (avoiding white van man, who was untouched). Even this did not affect her premium noticeably, but the insurers and car owner seemed suprised that she didn't just drive off.

Dragging up somewhat an old thread. I t-boned somebody (their fault pulled out right infront of me) anyway, I needed a new bonnet, headlight and the front bumper sanded/resprayed and grill, badge etc... Their insurer decided to repair my car and they did not write it off they just repaired it(thought they would have wrote it off as a Cat-D but they didn't).

Like others said you legally have to phone your insurer and tell them but make sure you tell them its informational purposes only and you do not wish to claim (unless you do). Personally I'd get it checked out for structural damage and just get a quote for either a bumper repair or a new bumper and respray.

Assuming its just the bumper I highly doubt your car would get wrote off if you did choose to go through your insurer.

Good luck :)
