My car has a problem with acceleration. More to the point, it has a problem at the top range of 4th and 5th gear which then affects acceleration in all gears after the fault occurs.

1st, 2nd and I think 3rd show no symptoms of this happening (yet) but in 4th and 5th, mostly at the mid to top part of the gear range. If I accelerate too hard then the car will have a noticeable jolt as though acceleration/power has been cut. If I am going faster than 70 at the time trying to get past someone then I will start to slow down, despite my foot being pressed to the floor.

After this jolt/power loss happens, no gear will rev past 3000, the top speed of the car will only be just under 70 (if i'm not going up a moderate incline), I am unable to maintain speed up hills at anything above 55/60. Basically the speed and acceleration of the car are limited, through every gear. The strange part of it all is that I can pull over, turn the ignition off and immediately restart the engine and then all returns to normal until I press the go pedal a little too hard at the wrong point and then the above starts all over again.

Can any of you help me with this? Have any of you come across this before?

The problem has been occurring for a few months now (probably close to 12) but it's not something the car has always done.

I've been searching on google for a while now with nothing coming up. The closest thing I could find here was this fiatforum.com/grande-punto/215094-loss-power but that's not the same thing.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Really hope you can help me here. It's so irritating.

Hi. It sounds as if its going into limphomemode

Getting the fault codesread may well be useful..but you havent mentioned any warning lights.

Checking spark plug gaps is a good start for general running..but you may well have a power/ earth fault to a sensor.

Hi mate, thanks for that. A quick search of limp home mode and they all feel a little familiar even if the car will be going faster than some of the posts I've read.

I don't have any warning lights though. Not one.

The fact that you mentioned an earth problem without me even prompting that probably tells me everything I need to know. I think the last thing I can do is take it to FIAT. At which point I won't even bother. I have spent an absolute fortune chasing electrical faults and earth problems on this car already. I'm not going to pay their fees to just move the problem sideways to somewhere else which is what I always seem to be doing.
