Hi all,

Have a 1.3 Multijet GP that lately developed a shaking of the steering wheel from what feels like front drivers wheel when accelerated to 60/70.

Anything less and there is nothing.

I brought to my local mechanic who is usually very good and he was certain it was lower ball joint so I had him replace both sides and do a full wheel alignment.

I tested when I got the car back and it felt okay but still something so after finally getting it in a long haul motorway journey it has happened again.

Any thoughts as I have lost a bit of faith in the mechanic now and couldn't come at a worse time when moving house.

All thoughts/ideas welcome.

Thanks

Surely it's wheel imbalance, any tyre fitting place should be able to rebalance your front wheels for around £5each.

Yeah hopefully wheel imbalance, worst case is that you have a buckled alloy (as happened to me!).

This.....have you hit a kerb or anything lately? Also check the tyre pressures and there are no unsightly bulges on either front tyre.

If the tyres and wheels don't seem to have any visible issues i.e. are safe then if you have a decent spare swap that on in place of each of the front wheels and see if that makes a difference. If no spare try swapping the front wheels to the back one at a time to see if you can identify the wheel with the issue

Wheels were balanced when ball joints were replaced.

I'll give the spare wheel a go, never thought of that actually.

Thanks guys I'll report back

Hi all,

Sorry for taking so long to get back, in the middle of moving house so not had a lot of time spare.

So I tried the spare tyre and that seems to have sorted the shaking out for the most part, still a small bit there but not sure if that's more of an "in my head" thing.

Taking the wheels to the garage this week to ensure its correctly balanced.

I have however now noticed a rattle coming from the front left, I can hear it only on an uneven road but more so on the rumble strips on my way in to the local shopping centre.

It doesn't sound as high up as a suspension bush/bracket and I don't feel it really through the steering wheel, any thoughts?

Droplinks are a common cause of rattling over low speed bumps. They are a metal rod which connects the suspension strut to the anti-roll bar with a ball joint at each end.

Give them a good shake and any movement and they'll need replacing. Having said that there was no movement in mind but they were knocking so needed replacing anyway.
