I was driving the other day along a road when the car beeped and the red airbag light came on. A message also appeared saying airbag failure please check owners manual.
I unplugged the battery that night which reset the light but now it has come back on. I was rear ended a couple of years ago but I was just driving along normally when it happened so at a loss as to what has happened.

My car is a 58 plate 1.4 8v dynamic, its going into the garage on Wednesday for the service and they will investigate then but any ideas? I have had a search and a few people seem to think update on the ECU or a new one? how much does this cost?!

Hi,
You or the garage need to run diagnostics software (such as Multecuscan) on the air bag system to see what the exact fault is. It could be a faulty bag, wiring, the "clockspring" in the steering wheel or an ECU issue. Most common is bad connection to an air bag (if you have side air bags in the seat, putting things under the seat can damage the wiring or pull the plug out) and the clock spring which connects the steering wheel airbag. This may show up as a steering wheel airbag fault, so make sure the garage checks at the airbag plug before just changing the airbag.

Robert G8RPI.

Thanks for that- I have removed and replaced both the front seat connectors and gave them the old blow clean (just like an old gameboy cartridge) but that did not work.

I'm thinking of trading it in soon so hoping that it wont be loads of money to fix!

Mine come on on my old mk2 punto. It was a faulty wire (in the glove box where you put the key in to turn the airbag on and off (passenger one). More than likely be a bad connection than a ecu problem.

Waiting now on the phone call from the garage! Got my bum clenched and fingers crossed it's a cheap fix!

Got my car back problem not sorted yet.
It is the front crash sensor at the front of the car. They are getting the part from main dealer then fitting it. 205 quid!

Not a mechanic Andy- so do not know.
I know that I was driving along a road completely normally when it lit up? So I have no idea what has caused it to fail or go bad. Where is the sensor in the car? Ive seen a few diagrams indicating it is next to the drivers side head light. Is this correct?

I was involved in a low speed bump about 18/19 months ago which was non fault. As I was the meat in a multiple low impact one. I could ring the insurers and ask if they replaced the sensor? No airbags went off it was that low impact. Half tempted to ring up and see if it was changed then??

I'll give them a call and ask. I asked at the time and they never gave me any info about it.

I had a look and can see it however access is limited as it's behind the grill and in front of radiator. I tried to pull off the grill as per the video however there was nothing giving and I pulled quite hard. Mine is an s2 grande so maybe they changed how it was removed?
