Hi all

Eventually got the punto back 3 weeks ago. Driving home Saturday the gearbox on my 2008 1.2 8v punto decided to blow up... just as it turned 40,001 on the clock!

1500 miles ago I had the driveshaft seals and gear box oil changed, but since then someone drove into it at 40 mph whilst it was parked, causing it to be launched into a round about. so its also been back and forth from the insurance company due to their crap standard of repair work on the car over the last 4 months!

So any way damage to the box could have been caused by the accident? or the insurance company garage messing about with it?

I wouldn't of thought the impact would cause the gearbox damage, unless it stems from force being pushed into the drive shaft putting force onto the gearbox internals. What side was damaged?

I believe the box is on the left of the engine, if it's that side it could be a cause and you could try claiming for the box..

Mine went after 59k, but that was due to it ran dry and driveshaft seals going, it was empty after getting the oil changed after 900 miles

the thing is though in the last 6 months had the seals and oil changed!

sorry to hear this..,:(

look under the gearbox + clutch housings, bone dry..?? or a fair bit of oil around..?

oily = BAD news, (n)
if DRY can you see any scrapes / damage.??

if oily / damaged.. get on to the insurance company as soon as..,
they will want to inspect it.., ;)

Hi Charlie

Nope no oil at all! And no scrapes or damage visible

Had it confirmed this morning today that it the gear box that has packed up and the clutch is all fine

No warnings a bit unusual. Apart from the known driveshaft seals, also the internal bearings can go, and dump oil in the bell house. Still, it seems to have happend too fast for that, perhaps just one of the gears/cogs/synchros suddenly broke. That would destroy it quickly. High torque? Sounds like you are a caring driver and owner, not many change their GB oil and seals as a pre-caution.

High torque and a 1.2 don't exactly go together :)

We have a 56 reg 1.2 in are family we had to have the box changed at around 46000 it started with a noise in first and second gear at just over 40000 when it was removed the lay shaft bearing and seal had collapsed but a fiat breaker told me that its common and also that the diffs will not cope with wheel spinning in these gear boxes

No problem. Just for our education, what was the fault? Or were you not told by the garage? If it was seals again, I hope it was fixed under warranty.

As nr15/BFG says, the problems seem well-known by many in the business of gearboxes. Good luck with your new one, fortunately it's extremely unlikely to happen a second time.
