Hi there this is my very 1st post and am in need of some advice. I recently acquired a fiat punto grande automatic. 09 plate 30k on the clock. Last nite I noticed it took a few attempts to get it into gear from neutral but didn't think much of it. Then this morning when I went out the digital display read , manual method unavailable check transmission in handbook, also a warning light came on. It's on the speedo clock and is the furthest light to the right (sorry hope I'm being clear enough) this was on for about 30 seconds then it went out and all seems fine again but surely this isn't the case? I know hardly anything about cars so am asking for any advice as to what it may be and should I be getting to a garage ASAP? Also tge breather pipe has perished, I have duct taped it but thought should mention incase this could be connected to the transmission problem? Will be extremely greatful for any advice
Regard Jim

Hi and welcome to the forum's.

I would get the pipe changed. You should be able do it yourself via the guides on the forums (if small one). Also without a error code its hard for people to help you. There is plenty of people on here with a programming called multiecu scan which is a third party version of fiats diagnostics. This will give you fiats versions of error codes and a name for the code. This will help people to try and pinpoint your problem

How did you acquire the car? If got it from a garage and less that 30 days ago take it back and ask them to look at it as legally they have too within first 30 days. If over that maybe a warranty?

Hi thanks for the advice. I was given it by a relative so no warranty I'm afraid. Can't even complain as if was free so have to be greatful lol

I have a semi automatic same as you. They take some while to get used to. They are a manual gearbox with a hydraulic clutch that's controlled by the car. I would imagine there is a sensor or switch that's tells the car that's its in manual mode and this could be the problem. With it on fully auto you still can change gear yourself (what I do)

Ah so is yours the same as mine? Neutral is up reverse is back and automatic is in the middle. Then to go fully manual you push gear stick to the left to disengage the auto function? I never use manual as like you say can change gear anyway in auto. So hope it's a sensor as sounds cheaper than a transmission failure hopefully. Ta for replying

Yeah mine is the same. Would imagine if was transmission failure you wouldn't be able to move the car. Sounds more like a sensor but best thing is get a diagnostic teat done to make sure. Fiat will charge a small fortune for this (£50 plus vat near me). I got that programming for £36 then wires £20 so total £56 and I've reset my service on car twice (needs doing via a fiat computer) so saved already :)
