I'm looking at selling my MK2 punto and getting the 1.9 GP diesel.

Just looking for some information and opinions on the car, what should I look out for when buying? How much power can the engine and transmission take in regards to modifications and horsepower/torque etc. Which colour tends to hold its 'shine' I want it to stay looking nice, bright and shiny for car events.

What mileage should I be looking at? under 60k? up to 90k? etc.

Look forward to hearing from this side of the community :)

I purchased the GP 1.9 sporting late last year, loved it since day one! Mines on just over 70,000 miles and in black and still has very tidy paintwork. But in the last month I had a funny noise almost like a wheel bearing was on its way out so I got it checked out, ended up being a bearing in the gearbox which i have been quoted for £700, gearbox matey said they do go around this sort of mileage so I guess from experience that's the only thing I can say to look out for! As far as power, I've heard people taking it to 170-200bhp with full cat back exhaust and Induction kit!

I've had mine for almost a year now. The engines on these are great with plenty of tuning potential. Can achieve around 170bhp with just a remap alone.

Since purchase I have had to replace the EGR valve, turbo, gearbox bearings, front suspension top strut mounts, drivers door lock mechanism and a few small bits here and there that I can't remember... But since doing the work it's been great! Economy is good, I average between 41-45 around town and 55 on a run.

I suggest you take a look at this https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/89495-recalls-known-fault-issues.html

It may be useful to read up on common M32 gearbox issues. A simple google search will direct you in the right place but for reference try this http://www.wgmotorworks.co.uk/?page_id=48

The interior is nice and has all the gadgets I need; trip computer, blue & me, steering wheel controls.

Overall great car, economical, good tuning potential and relatively easy to maintain/repair if you're handy at it. Can have many annoying faults, some harder to diagnose than others, but the same goes with all cars and when its running good, its running good

Hope this helps.

100% black! Nightmare to keep clean though haha! I don't know what bearing it was, I didn't even ask haha! After that repair I have a lot of mods in mind!

Nice black seems a cheaper colour too, other colours seem to be more expensive...what mods do you have in mind? What bhp can the block handle

Mine is metallic black, (or Nero Provocateur to give it it's proper name!) and when it's clean, my Grande looks nothing short of stunning. :D But it does get dirty quickly, lol! :/

100% agree with Jacob on that one, gearbox is awfully weak! Urm of the top of my head, induction kit, Coilovers, hids, new alloys(not 100% sure on any yet), full custom exhaust from long life, intercooler, bucket seats, that's just what I've got in mind at the moment!

Is there an uprated gear box for them? Those mods sound very nice

No :-( When mine went I had the two main shaft bearings replaced with original bearings costing £500... biggest mistake ever! The problems are already coming back. I've been in touch with a company called courtney sport fairly local to me, who specialise in vauxhall tuning (share the same m32 gearbox) and they strip them down completely and rebuild using uprated bearings and all new seals etc. Even the diff gets an overhaul! Which is often forgotten about and is just as common a fault as the main bearings. Its pricey but wish I'd spent the extra few hundred and got it done properly. They say a standard box can take up to 300lb/ft torque and 20 to 30 more with the upgrades

That's not a good sign because mine is in for gearbox bearing(s) Monday lol! £700

Make sure they are checking everything in that box including the diff. If they aren't then take the car elsewhere. You will only find yourself having to repair it again in 6 months time. Hope you manage to cure it. Let us know your results!

Pretty much every 6 speed gearbox fitted in a Fiat/Alfa/Vauxhall/Lancia/Saab is a variant of the m32. I should imagine gear ratios and differentials are slightly different throughout the models and some have different mounts

Yeah I'll make sure to ask them to check it when I drop it off, cheers for the heads up on that :) yeah will do, fingers and toes crossed it'll sort it out!
