I have a Fiat Grande Punto 1.4l 2009. I was driving this morning and felt like i hit ice lost grip/power and then again a little further down the road then lost all power from the engine and heard a high pitched noise from the engine. I pulled over to look and turned off the engine. Looked in the engine bay and nothing looked wrong. When I got back in the car and started the engine no problem then when trying to get a gear I couldn't then finally got 3rd got to work in only 3rd then when I tried to move the car in any gear it moves about 2m's then slams to a halt as if I've done an emergency stop. Does anyone have any ideas and if so how much am I looking at to fix it?

My gear box locked this morning as well (58 T-jet).

I was waiting at the lights, pulled off in first fine then it wouldn't go into second or any other gear. I stopped, turn the car off, kept trying then it eventually went in. Then the same thing happened again.

After that it was ok until I got to work, but havn't checked it since. I'll keep you posted if problem persists.

But I'm thinking transmission fluid? Being hopeful mind you.

If the gearbox is a duologic then it is likely from my experience that the actuator is on its way out. Search "Gear Unavailable - check transmission". I have had exactly the same problem as listed above and then the gearbox starts to get worse. Eventually you will not be able to select gears. It is a fault that Fiat is aware of and has wiped their hands of. There are a number of old posts about gearbox problems with the duologic. Reading from the posts it appears that it was technology "borrowed" from Ferrari - just be glad that its a Fiat and not a Ferrari that has gearbox problems although from experience it is still not a good experience.

No it isn't a Duologic, just a standard manual. (As I assume a duologic is auto?)

It hasn't happened since yesterday, so it seems ok for now.

I have it booked in for a full service on Saturday and will ask them to have a look at the gearbox/ clutch (As it could also be an issue with the clutch not disengaging properly).
