Does anyone know how to improve the mpg on 1.4 16V mulijet because mine is around 35 at the moment and costing me loads of money in fuel

1.4 16V mulijet

All 'multijets' are diesel and if you have a diesel only managing 35mpg something is catastrophically wrong. They are also only 1.3 1.6 or 1.9 in puntos

If it is however a 1.4 16v petrol then 35mpg isn't horrific if you have a heavy right foot. Might be improved with a good service new plugs and leads, oil and filter air filter etc, check tyre pressures are correct all the usual culprits that effect economy

1.4 ? multi-jet? hmmm

maybe t-jet ? or a star-jet ?

35 from a 1.2 GP? Mine's showing 51 on the computer at the moment which has been pretty close to real MPG when I've checked against real MPG in the past

35mpg is about right for a t-jet if you have a heavy right foot.

Go easy on the accellerator and brakes, dont travel at high speed and anticipate whats coming and you will easily see 40+ mpg.

I have had 50mpg out of my t-jet regularly on a run up the A614 near me, its a 50 mph limit and if i go steady on the loud pedal it will sit at 50mpg all day long

I get about 42 average with my 1.9 that's with driving ten miles town, 10 miles motorway to work and then back again every day :)
I'm fairly happy with it to say that my Stilo used to get about 27 mpg and £70 to fill.

1.9 costs me about 40-45 to fill now :)

Right foot, warm or cold engine especially, warm or cold weather, hard tyres, well-serviced and good fuel all matter. I have a 57 1.2 GP.

On a recent long 700mile north-europe trip ( I had over-inflated the tyres to 36PSI) I averaged 63 mpg, as calculated by full tank to full tank. That still included 4 cold starts and 120 miles of twisting roads with stops, starts and some hills to get to Dover and back. Also on/off ferry twice and stuck in static traffic jams for over an hour.

The rest was mainly at 60mph , sticking to staying behind the lorries. I guess that at that speed it will have been running at 70mpg. Not bad for the old 1.2 .

Yes it was driving like a nun, on a nice warm dry day. 60-70mph behind lorries down the motorway and a little bit of A-roading. Air con was also on the whole time; I know people say air con makes a big difference to fuel economy, but in all honesty I've never ever noticed it make any difference!

It looks like diesels are less affected than petrol's with respect to fuel economy being reduced due to AC usage. I can only guess that this is due to the higher torque the diesel engines produce which doesn't notice the AC drag/sapping power as much as it would in a petrol engine. As a result, less loud pedal is required to keep the same speed relative to a petrol engine up to 2litres and 4 cylinders.

I'm averaging 50mpg on the button over 2000 miles now (4 tank fills). About 400 of that was motorway and the rest to and from work. The commute trips are really short in my case, 2 miles each way, so the engine hardly warms up and I don't hang about during traffic hour as neither does anyone else. In addition I waste at least 10 minutes of fuel every time it is frosty or my windows have steamed up on the inside by running the car, AC and heaters to clear the glass.

All in all, given my style of driving and type of trips I do, 50mpg is not a bad combined average for the 1.3Mjet. The moral of the story, if you want economy, especially if you are doing A-roads and M-ways mileage, get a diesel. :D

With regards to the OP question, MPG is directly related to your right foot and your driving style my friend. A case in point, E36 328 2.6 6-cylinder 24V on track, started with a full tank 80+ litres, 5 hours and 220 miles later we were out of fuel. The computer read 14.1MPG :D I'm the driver in the vid and my friend avoiding being seen recording by marshals on track is in the passenger seat......but apparently I'm not allowed to post a you-tube link on this board and Im constantly being kicked out, asked to refresh and re-login....hmm I forgot how annoying this phpbb board actually is lol

I'm amazed you managed as high as 14.1 going at that rate

Us too, but it was fun so economy was on the back burner :D

The intention was to make the OP realise that mpg is largely affected by the style of driving, as much as any of the other factors. (y)
