hi guys wondered if any of you had any advice. I have a 1.9 grande punto 2006. I was driving when it cut out and went into limp mode. Sat it at home over night and would not start. The sender unit in the tnk seemed to be struggling a little so i disconnected the fuel lines at the filter and the diesel came through fine so i assume no problems from the sender unit to the engine.

I called a out and they read the codes and found a high pressure pump warning so the first mistake made was to get towed to their preferred garage which is halfords DO NOT USE HALFORDS. they replace the battery and the egr valve and said it was fine. i went to collect and it broke down again in the car park. They then had it 3 weeks and could not find any faults :bang::bang::bang:

I told them i was coming to collect it and towed it home where its now sitting on the drive the problem being they wiped the codes from the ecu so its now showing no faults - wont start at all - and i have no idea

help would be great thanks

Did the egr valve get changed or cleaned? My old focus wouldn't start turned out needed new egr valve cost me small fortune. Also once wouldn't start due to fuel system needed bleeding and being self bleeding car took ages to get air out and start. Also when you say high fuel pressure you mean was too high or low? Diesels need a lot off pressure to start. Does it try to tick over or is there nothing at all?

Hi cobalt thanks for the reply. It had a brand new egr fitted last week. Im not sure weather it needs bleeding or not though. When the aa came out he sprayed something into the air intake while i turned the key and it tried to fire but when he stopped it went back the same. It turns over the starter kicks in etc everything as it should but it just doesnt fire. Im not sure if the pressure was too high or too low it came up as a fault on the high pressure pump. I could replace the pump with a recon one but they are quite pricey so i was wondering if it could be anything else before i go for the expensive option.

When comes to no starting diesels can be lot things. Without codes its hard to pin point. If goes turn over then battery and starter sound ok. Not egr valve as been changed. Could be air in system, injectors, cylinder seals etc. How long you had the car? I remember on one my old diesels a dealer changed the fuel filter first to try that and they noticed that on front fuel pump the nut was loose. They tightened the but, kept turning car over and it bleed the system and it started. You got multiecuscan? Sometimes they have a diagnostic that tells you pressure etc on car when trying turn it over etc

Well iv had it about 2 years now and not had any major issues till this came up. I noticed the sender unit struggling a little then after a few days cut out under acceleration then wouldnt start. I tested and found that fuel is reaching the filter but im not quite sure il be ok at checking it after that point due to the lack of space around the engine. I think i may have to bite the bullet and take it to the garage for them to have a look and cross my fingers its not the pump

Before take it a garage sounds daft but open the bonnet. Just in front off the engine block you should see some lines connected with like a clip going through them (near cylinders). These are the leak off pipes. Make sure that all the clips are pushed in properly. You'll know if they are as you'll hear a click. Then try start car. If starts just need a new leak off kit with any luck. This can cause non starting as not enough pressure due to air coming in. Otherwise I'd take it to a good fiat garage. If from around Merseyside I can recommend forwards autos in St Helens they are great.

Hey so i have the report from the garage after 8 weeks without my car. The high pressure fuel pump, high pressure fuel sensor needs replacing, theres a heater plug out too so while theyre in there i thought id get them replaced too. Ouch !

£510 in total. Could be a lot more i supose so cant complain too much ?
