Got a bit of a strange one so hoping for some help, hopefully people have had this issue themselves and know what it was...

Car's been running fine up to now, even this morning i went out in it no problem. A few hours later I went to go out again and there was no response whatsoever from the ignition when i turned the key. Lights are coming on as normal and the radio turned on.

A neighbour came round and fiddled with the buttons on the key that lock the doors and eventually the ignition worked and the car started, which led him to think it was either the battery in the key or the immobiliser.

He then took the key out of the ignition but the engine stayed running. After a few seconds though it switched off. Tried ignition again a few times with no probs so off i went out. When i came to leave for home the car beeped and a 'have power steering checked' warning came up on dash. As i drove off i felt the steering was heavy (not had any probs with steering to this point).

Got home, took key out and again engine stayed running but died after a few seconds. But when i've gone to start it again it won't, and no amount of playing with the buttons like my neighbour did will start the engine. My dad's on his way over but he's far from an expert so thought I would ask on here if anyone has any ideas.

When you took the key out lights/dashboard etc remained on?

Diesel engine ?

ok, check for water in fusebox. You have an electrical problem there or a stuck relay or a fuel line solenoid problem.

Dad's looking at fuse box, no water. Relevant fuses/relays look ok. He's held the lock button on the key in and turned and the engine has started and now the light on the dash with the car/key has turned off whereas before it was staying on. But it's still saying 'check power steering'.

Put a new battery in the key and everything seems to be working fine now. No check power steering warning and it's steering fine and starting first time and engine's cutting off when i take the key out so hopefully it was just a case of needing a new battery in the key.

I'm afraid it's not just a battery in the key. (or it's a key/immob related problem)

Lets see how it goes.

Hi, and Welcome to FF:)

slightly confusing..,:(

the check PAS light is normally up because the power supply to the ECU ( cars brain) is poor,

usually because of a failing VEHICLE ENGINE Battery,
BUT could be poor earth , or failing alternator,

see how things go - BUT a replacement BOSCH battery is cheaper than an hour in a garage..;)

However the fact that the engine would run-on is a little odd ( not normally a power supply issue), however your modern diesel may need something powering-up to actually STOP the engine,

so you're plip battery MAY have caused it.. time will tell,

can you update us next weekend,? TA,

Charlie - Oxford
