Hi, have been smelling fuel in the cabin recently so took a look under the bonnet today and could see some fuel around the bottom of the fuel pump (see attached photograph). From the image can anyone give an idea as to if it looks like the pump itself is leaking or could it be coming from elsewhere? As you can see only the bottom part is actually looking dirty. Or maybe I am completely wrong and the black is something else?

Thanks

Had another look at this today in the light of day. The coolant level is low and there appears to be some leaking around the end of the coolant pipe which is spraying onto that round metal thing above it (see pic in Post #1 ). Could it perhaps be that the darkness on the bottom of the fuel pump is coolant which has leaked over that area?

Are you sure its diesel leak? Yes it could as down there is the thermostat.

Hi,

No I am not sure, I gave it a wipe and it was just very black, but then again so is most of the rest of the stuff down there!

So could the thermostat be leaking coolant? Is the thermostat the thing in the picture with the barcode sticker peeling off? It does look like there is a leak around there. I apologise for my ignorance!

Well yes... Clean the area and go for a ride. Then check again where's the leak.

Gave it a good clean, and took it for a spin up and down the dual carriageway, so far no signs of leak so I'll check it again in a few days.

It is a 2008 model with 110K on the clock and spends a lot of time by the sea so I'm not surprised about the way it looks.

Clearly I just need to get this car to the garage for someone who knows what they are doing to look at but I did notice a pool of something dark and wet when checking it tonight, see picture. That photo is looking in from the left hand side and there appears to be a puddle around the bottom of that red thing. It also isn't starting well...oh dear

I can't understand but I hope that is not the head cause I see it's very close to chain side.

Just a red herring I think. I've driven it a few hundred miles since cleaning up under the bonnet and I can't see anything which is leaking. Perhaps the fuel smell is something else. I am changing the glow plugs next week so I'll have another poke around when the engine cover is off. I've read lots of threads about fuel smell in the cabin on petrol models, and what to check but I can't find the same info for the diesel. Most the posts mention the breather hose being split. Does that apple to the MJ?
