Hi FF

This is my first post as im new to the forum, iv found alot of answers on here previously so thought id come and join the fun!

I have a 56 plate grande punto active, my eml is flashing amber, it only flashes a few times then goes off but this only seems to happen when going over 60mph

I have a good friend who is also a college tutor teaching motor vehicle, he is very good with cars and i trust him 100% as he hasnt been wrong yet although it has been fairly straight forward thus far!

He plugged in a diagnostics machine for me and it said it was misfiring on 2 cylinders and hes almost certain its the coil pack!
Iv had a look and luckily i have only 1 coil pack, all 4 leads plug into the 1 pack! I trust he is correct with his diagnosing of the problem but i do worry so i suppose iv posted this for comfort really, i just want to double check it is that before i throw 90 quid at a new coil pack

Thank you very much in advance for answers
Jamie

Haha, well since this problem came about iv had to drive under 60 :) on the plus side iv saved alot of money on petrol

Before spending money on a new coil pack, i'd do one of the following.

Start by replacing plug number 2, (or all of them).

Or a cheaper option, would be to swap plug No2 and No3 around.
If the misfire shifts to No3, you know the culprit is the plug.

Then. start looking at plug lead No2 etc (if they can be changed on this coil pack).

After all this, then start looking at the coil pack.

Thanks keat63 il give it a crack, i completely forgot to mension in this post aswell, the cambelt was changed not long ago and thats when i started seeing the eml, it is timed up correctly so i dont think its a problem there, with it being a misfire on 2 cylinders i just assume its a coincidence that the light has started flashing after the cambelt change, dont think it has anything to do with that?

somebody in the panda section has the exact same problem.., have a look,
charlie

Cheers Charlie, just had a quick look, looks very very similar although i have had the belt looked at again as it was the first thing i thought of, all seems okay, spoke to my mate again and hes still convinced its the coil pack but hes gonna plug it in again for me tonight so...il keep posted whats happening, thanks all

Ahh another garage who doesn't know what they are doing.........

The light comes on as the cars ecu hasn't been told that the belt has been changed the old belt will have stretched a bit the cars ecu will have detected this and adapted itself... However it won't addapt backwards now because your can and crank are in ever so slightly different positions the crank and cam position sensors are out of position ((so the car thinks))

The ecu needs telling its had a new belt by varying out a PHONIC WHEEL RELEARN done by a fiat examiner computer or some after market software leads and a laptop eg multi ecu scan, you paid a garage to do the work go back and ask them if they did it.... If they stare blankly at you you know they didn't and charged you only to do half a job

Andy monty if this phonic wheel relearn was done now, would it clear the eml? And is that why its saying misfire on 2 cylinders?

Hi Andy! Just out of curiosity, phonic wheel learn is needed only for 8V engines right ?

is it worth just replacing the coil pack and all leads and plugs? Iv got the coil pack already so i might aswell spend an extra couple of quid on the lot

Ah that's the same as mine. Are you getting codes of random misfires after the timing belt was changed? That's what mine was doing.

yeah i plugged it in again last night and there was 2 codes, one saying a random/multiple misfire and one saying cylinder 2 misfire

That sounds the same as mine which is also a 1.2, different error codes came up after they were cleared. I found two problems, my issues were:
1. Air leak on the intake. Both the small pipe from the airbox to the manifold and the rubber seal between the airbox and the throttle body were split and had to be replaced.
2. The cambelt had been replaced (about 70k miles) and a phoenic wheel learn was needed (this sorted the engine management light and bad running at motorway speeds). If I remember right you have to do the following:
i. With a warm engine.
ii. Rev up to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
iii. Let it drop down to idle.
iv. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
v. Drop to idle.
vi. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
vii. Drop to idle.
viii. Switch right off and wait a few moments.
Then you're done.

Hopefully one of the resident experts will drop by to confirm my memory of the sequence above

DGPunto i might give it a crack tmorro, gonna replace the plugs leads and coil anyway, that way i know theyre new and i shouldnt have a problem with them but il give the phonic wheel relearn a go, does it matter that the ecu is not new? Will it still learn?
