Hi guys,

Just done a 130 mile drive to norfolk and I was driving along the car jumped out of 6th gear making a crunching noise and would not engage in any gear what so ever at first I thought the clutch had gown due to not allowing me to select. Switched the car off then on again and the car went in all gears stationary I was 8 miles from my destination so I took a gentle drive to my destination I noticed it was sometimes hard to engage a gear and the car is making a diff whining noise and occasionally when driving along you can hear from what it sounds like to me that it's trying to select or crunch a gear?

That's my explanation lol any questions please do ask and hoping someone on here can help or point me in the right direction as I'm now on holiday 130m from home and not a clue what step to take other than getting towed home Monday!

Sorry to say but it very much sounds like substantial parts of your gearbox has failed!

I'm going to hazard a guess at it being a 1.9 MultiJet Sporting? lol.

Yeah it's the 1.9 mjet sporting lol just been to the local garage where I'm staying and they weren't interested!

Contacted local garage at home who are gonna source another gearbox supply and fit. What sort of money am I looking at? It only just came out the garage two days ago after the alternator belt shredding!!

If your location tag is up to date then you're near Leicester. Intaservices are an Alfa specialist which have a good reputation on Alfa forums and they look after my daughter's GP having recently replaced the timing belt and waterpump at a reasonable rate.

Might be worth giving them a call?

Is the gearbox really that easy to remove that it can be done in 2 hours? I am replacing my sisters 1.2 gearbox soon and partly dreading it as the last one i did was on an Alfa GTV which involved removing all the engine manifolds, subframe, all the front suspension etc (not all of those were required but I had to go further due to stuck bolts in in-accessible locations).

Car is at my local garage now but they still haven't had chance to strip it down yet to find out what's wrong :( hate being without a car let alone my pride and joy

Hi guys
Not been on here in ages due to working ridiculous hours!!
Not much of an update either I've been off the road for 3 weeks now and they are atruggling to find parts to recon my box without having to go through horrendous main dealer prices! Now on the hunt for a second hand gearbox which is a struggle

I bought a second hand gearbox and new driveshaft oil seals as the originals are made of an inferior material apparently so I'd make sure they're changed and also I bought a brand new clutch kit, all in cost me around £300 delivered so not too bad, got a friend who's a mechanic to fit it for £100, fraction of what a garage would charge for the job!
