Hello all

Really need your help 2 weeks ago my fiat punto wouldn't start and when we run a diagnostic check it was showing code u0001. Fiat dealership took the car and fixed the pins that attach to the ecu apparently. Now this fixed the issue then 2 weeks later I get a cancheck fault show up on the radio display. Fiat are not helping at all and last time suggested replacing the ecus which was very expensive. If I turn the car off and on again it resets the faults. Every time this fault shows I loos all electronics on the speedo, temp gage and revs. However like I said if I turn the engine off and on it resets. Fiat are not helping at all and I'm just about finished with this car can anyone give me advice I'm currently pursuing stoneacre through trading standards as they just want more and more money :(

Check the battery and earth straps are OK see FAQ electrical gremlin thread

Hi Andy

I'm not at all mechanically minded can you tell me how to check the earth straps in ideot form lol. Or possible a diagram may help. Help most appreciated

hi Aaron
you need to get your car away from this dealership as either they dont understand the cars they work on or their master tec is hopeless
Your problem is most likely wiring ,specifically the can bus wiring most probably from ecu, i would suggest get car to a garage that specialises in this type of problem,it might just be a case of localised corrosion or possibly a chaffed wire
the dealership seem to have run the codes got the basic idea where to look but cant find the cause only the reason

Thanks mate that defiantly sounds correct mate they are useless there was a problem with the can wire that has been rectified but car is still now and then showing faults and if I reset the car by turning on and off it fixes the issue

What year is the car 2006 /2007 by any chance?

It's a 2007 model mate was absolutely fine then all of a sudden this issue happened and fiat have not been of any help. They said that they would run a full diagnostics on it which I thought is good as it has a abs fault that needs to be sorted. When the bill came it was £190 and they said the car and all faults where fixed. When we picked it up abs light was still on dash so I said I thought it was all fixed! To be told that apparently they didn't notice there was a fault with the abs. So I said but you ran a full diagnostic check on the car so surely you would see the fault and they said no we only ran a part diagnostic check. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I have never heard of a part diagnostic check. And apparently they didn't notice the abs light on the dash or the audible alarm that went with it lol

Abs is a different issue probably the wiring loom down to the passenger wheel but impossible to tell without been plugged in

Hello mate yea abs was checked on the diagnostics is said change front right weal baring and sensor both replaced but fault still present. As for the ecu update I'm pretty sure this have never been updated as far as I no is there a way to get this checked without a fiat dealership

Also when it was with fiat they changed the ecu for a new one to see if it would make a difference but was still the same so fiat said it's not an ecu issue apparently

It will never say that the computer can't tell if its a bearing or wheel sensor without further investigation .. Usually a man with a multi meter

Which branch of stone acre did you go to I've fallen out with Doncaster Scunthorpe and Worksop

Find a independent auto electrician to check the battery alternator (most will do this free) on the hope of a sale what battery is on the car from memory originals are varta branded if your lucky if one lasts 4 years on a gp

And get them to check the abs wiring to the right side water gets in the wiring via the sensor plug and rots a decent auto electician will be able to replace tghe wiring to the abs unit to wheel sensor fairly cheaply fiat usually will only usually change the entire loom which will cost a fortune

We went to the one in peterborough, the snap on diagnostics that they used at another garage said change sensor and wheel baring they actually showed me it on screen. I will take it to a auto electrician see wat they say I'm currently running up a case through motoring trading standards. As fiat garage said all faults are fixed which obviously wasn't the case and from watt I have been told stoneacre doesn't have a good reputation lol

Never seen a snap on machine sounds like a licence to print money a bad / hightly restive wire can throw up the same fault

Well I think I will get it to a auto electrician I think that may be the best way to go at the moment. I'm defiantly not taking it back to fiat again there customers service and mechanical service stinks. Hopefully I may get a result through trading standards but need to get car sorted for mot in October :/ bloody cars to my head in

Hello all

Right still no further with the car however the car cut out again last week including the speedo again. Now out of anger I popped the bonnet open and where the to connectors are on the ecu in the centre I have them a good bang downwards I felt one of the cables move slightly back in as if one of them was loos. Believe it or not car started strait away and have had no issues with it since. Could this be a possible cause ? Just a loose connector and if so is there any wat of making sure the connector stays in place. We did hit a few bumpy roads the day it stopped working so I'm thinking possible it just became a little loos and was not sitting correctly
