Hi all,

The missus has been complaining that the car is noisy so I just took a look. I appears that the part of the front shock absorber that holds the spring has collapsed on one side causing it to rub on the tyre.

is this part something that can be swapped or fixed or is it a new shock absorber job.

In either case how much would is cost to fix on a 1.3jtd gp.

She thinks that she did it hitting a curb. ....

cheers

I think it would be best to just get a replacement shock absorber...that would be around 60-80 euros + 1-1.5 hours labor.

I would change the spring aswell to be sure mate , if it's the wee platform bit that the spring sits on I would just replace the whole strut just to be safe

And then teach her to drive. :)

That's soo true it was only 2 weeks ago she put
premium unleaded into it £10 over the top of an almost empty tank of diesel.

The spring was replaced about 10k ago after it snapped so that should be ok (it looked it). The shock looks quite corroded so I suspect that its the corrosion that was the main cause just helped along by her driving. I looked at the driveshaft / cv boot area and it looks ok. I will check the wishbone but I don't remember it looking worse for wear.

The tyre is definitely on the to be changed list as it has about a 3m x 3mm grove worn out of it on the inner edge.

The car is now sat outside the house now for a week as she has gone to the usa for a week (girls holiday). Ive told her that shes probably looking at about £60 for the shock plus about 2hr labour so around £160 or so plus a tyre (£36).

Cheers for your help and suggestions guys,

Regards

Lee

Remember that shocks need to be changed in pairs or the handling of the car could be severely compromised. Don't make it any easier for her to crash it ;)

This.

Along with avoiding very budget tyres which £36 will get you, unless you've got an excellent deal on a decent tyre that is.

Cheap motoring is ok but don't scrimp on the only thing holding you onto the road.

I see what you mean about shocks being replaced in pairs , the car is going in tomorrow so I will make a list of things.

The tyres come from a tyre place near me (tyreman Merthyr) they simply sell part worn and 1 range of new tyres. I always go for new and the price for the size of tyre on her punto is £36. I thought that they wouldn't be the best so I put some on the front of my car (ford focus) last year and I have to say they hold up well and have outlasted the last set of tyres on the car (toyo proxies) with the same grip and performance.

As a bonus her mot is due to so the garage are doing it for £30 with the front shock work. I am expecting a bill of around £60-70 for the shock and 2 hours labour (say £100) plus the mot.
